The British Army Garrison in Malta. 1799 - 1881
When searching for ancestors who had served in the British Army, it is necessary to keep an open mind, since things were not always so clear cut and precise as may be imagined when dealing with military matters.
In Regimental Histories due to the need to cover a long period of years in a reasonable number of pages, and highlight the regiment’s achievements, much detail has to be omitted, which leads to short statements like ‘The regiment served in Malta from 1820 to 1825’, as if nothing happened during their five years on the island. Not only are the arrival and departure months not mentioned but exact dates are almost never given. It was normal for a regiment to arrive at Malta in one, two or three divisions, possibly over a period of weeks.
When a regiment sailed from Malta after a tour of duty, some sick men were often left behind, and these men may have died say six months later when the regiment was back in England, or was based elsewhere in the world.
At certain critical times the British Army assembled large numbers of men for invasions, 1800 for Egypt, 1805 for Sicily, and later in 1854 for the Crimea. Needless to say many injured or sick men from such conflicts were brought to Malta without their regiments, so again the regiment is shown as serving elsewhere, whereas the soldier may have died in Malta.
Similarly Malta was staging post on the route to the Middle East and British India, so ships would call here to land the bodies of men who had died on board, or land sick men unable to continue their journey, and who often died later.
The number of men in a battalion would fluctuate, due deaths, deserters, and discharges. Small detachments of men would be sent out from England to join their regiments overseas and to keep the numbers up. In the other direction, small groups made up of the sick, discharged men, and convicted men being sent for transportation to Australia, from several regiments were returned to England.
Another aspect of the British Army at this time was that a number of women and children would travel with the regiment. The total number of each is frequently mentioned on arrivals and departures, but frustratingly for family researchers never named. Also, for a period of several years they were not recorded at all on arrivals and departures. Senior officers would often have their civilian servants with them, and again these are not named, just recorded as ‘plus two female servants’.
Not all the officers in a regiment would be in Malta with their regiment. Many had leave of absence for other duties or private matters, so although they appear in the ‘Army List’ as officers of a particular regiment it does not guarantee that they served in Malta. The officers on this list were certainly in Malta.
The titles of the Regiments shown are those in force at the actual time that they served in Malta. Some were amended over the years, and the Cardwell Reforms in 1881 caused the amalgamation of most infantry regiments. Since then with the reduction in size of the British Army, further mergers and changes of title have taken place.
Maltese Regiments are not shown since they are covered elsewhere, but foreign regiments in British pay are included. These were: Chasseurs Britanniques, Corsican Rangers, De Rolls Regiment, De Meurons Regiment, De Wattevilles Regiment, Dillons Regiment, Froberg Regiment and the Sicilian Regiment.
