This was the proverbial game of two halves. Buoyed up by recent victories Year 5 started with great confidence. Year 6 on the other hand preferred to put to one side all they might have learned this year. Theirs was a disjointed, ill disciplined performance in the opening part of the game. They lacked shape and team work.
Year 5 were able to exploit this and although they did not enjoy great possession, Jack Ellis showed superb speed and good finishing to give them a deserved 2-0 lead by half time.
A no nonsense half time team talk with Captain Nicky Day demanding a more cohesive effort clearly pulled Year 6 up sharp. They then turned in a much better display. Gavin Taylor moved up front and suddenly they had more purchase. It wasn't long before he had drawn the scores level with two fine strikes.
When Gavin completed an excellent hat-trick and Nicky Day scored a fine goal to give Year 6 a 4-2 lead, Year 5 looked somewhat shell shocked. Suddenly they woke up to what was going on and Jack Ellis got the second hat-trick of the match. He ran on to a through ball and finished in accomplished style to make it 4-3.
The game was now swinging from end to end. Gavin Taylor grabbed a 4th and Year 5 replied when James Foyle showed great determination to bring the scores to 5-4.
And that's how it finished. A rather breathless match that gives Year 6 a 3-2 advantage going into the last game in the competition.
