YEAR 5 LOOKING GOOD
YEAR 5 5 YEAR 6 2
16.07.03
From the onset there was a determination about this Year 5 performance which bodes extremely well for next season. Their early pressure was soon rewarded when Tim Anderson struck an unstoppable shot from distance, giving Joseph Galvin no chance in the Year 6 goal. A second was added 5 minutes later. Matthew Fargie hit a cross come shot which found its way into the top far corner of the net.
Year 6 battled but could not keep possession, until a better passing move released Toby Gibbs down the left. He cut inside beating the full back and drove the ball under the Michael Lamb's dive to bring the score to 2-1.
For a while it looked as if Year 6 might get back on level terms, but Year 5 showed great adventure and towards the end of the first half they added two more to their tally. Danny Evans picked up on some scrappy defending and poked the ball home from close range, and Matthew Fargie scored his second in similar fashion to give Year 5 a 4-1 advantage at half time.
Year 6 began the second period in more organised fashion and for much of the half had the lion's share of the pressure, although the game did ebb and flow. Despite this the older boys were unable to find the back of the Year 5 net, and with five minutes left Year 5 sealed their victory when Jack Ellis was in the right place at the right time to reward a determined break.
To their great credit Year 6 kept up the effort and near the end grabbed a consolation goal. Thomas Page, who had worked hard all game, hit a fierce shot from the right which Michael Lamb could do nothing about. The game finished 5- 2 to Year 5, although the second half had been a 1-1 draw.
Year 5 look like a very useful outfit and under Mr Walker's management could do very well for the school next year. They have developed an encoraging understanding of the rudiments of 11 a side football -- well done.
Well done too to Year 6 who maintained pride in this competition against some skilful opposition. They were superb at the end of this match, showing great sportmanship. They shook hands with the Year 5 players, gave them three cheers and congratulated them on their victory. Truly a Tubbenden team.
