VIDEO SEARCHES

We also undertake special searches for videos
on Areas and Places not currently on our list;
our fee is the Normal Shop or List Price, plus £3;
If in doing a search, we find a studio who is willing to trade with us
to give us the wholesale price,
then we charge the normal shop price and waive the search fee.
(That is the way many new titles have been added over the years).

Although we have some sports titles still on our list,
we regret we can no longer undertake
special searches for sporting subjects;
we stick to "towns and cities in the UK," and local or social history,
plus naval and military titles that have a historic content.

PAL & NTSC formats

All titles are in PAL format; many are available in NTSC, where indicated, and increasingly more are coming out in DVD.
Please be aware that many new video machines recently on the market
now play BOTH video formats, and that special conversion
may not always be neccessary, even for the USA and Canada.
And not all DVDs play on all machines. Later machines should play everything, but earlier generations of DVD players may not play DVD's recorded on ordinary computers. If unsure, please check with us.
We'll try our best to guide you.

We now only keep a small selection of 'Sport related' titles, mostly to do with nostalgia and past sporting events.

ABOUT US

We are Valerie and Rob Haywood, and our Mail Order Video business is based here in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.

We came to live in Hull in 1973, both of us being originally from Leicester, for anyone who remembers us there. Our business started in 1995 by advertising in "This England" and "The Lady" magazines, both sold world-wide. (See our adverts in "This England" for Summer 95, and Autumn in 96 and 97).

We then mainly supplied local history titles of Hull and East Yorkshire, and many of our customers today are readers of those magazines, plus readers of magazines in the genre of "Womans Own" and "Peoples Friend".

That alone should tell you more about us, and the titles we keep, than anything else we can say here.

Those early local history titles, and now we have dozens from around the UK, are a good example of what we do. We generally like to specialise in titles that are not available nationally, but available only in the local areas where they were made, like the Cornish, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire titles on the heritage lists - they are probably not normally available outside those counties. Many are not even available in shops.

Not a few of our customers are in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, and have found our lists very suitable to find videotapes of "home" and the UK.

There is many a nostalgic tear to be shed here, just looking at the evocative names in some of the titles! Why not have a browse and stimulate those memories? Even if we haven't a video with mention of the exact county or area you come from, we will almost certainly have others you know, or used to take holidays in. Just one request from a USA customer for a video on Lighthouses led to our finding all our titles on Cornwall and the Penwith Peninsular.

There are so many available, we can often get you one in our video-find service, details below. If we draw a blank, leave us your details; we'll find one eventually - new ones are being released almost weekly. This is still early days to expect full Internet video coverage in the same way as we now have with books . . .

OUR "VIDEO FIND" SERVICE for E-MAIL customers only

These on-line pages contain the majority of our previous magazine-advertised lists, all offered at normal shop prices, but customers are always welcome to e-mail us if they are looking for a particular town or county or local history subject.

We can get videos on many other areas of the UK to order. For instance, our county list excludes Rutland, but we can get a video on Rutland Villages, but we would have to charge £3 over the shop price to cover our costs.

Please Note: owing to demand for our main-stream titles, we regret we can no longer undertake special searches for any subjects other than "towns and counties in the UK," and local or social history. Generally, no sport.

We can obtain many different regional titles for you, not normally on our list; we charge the NORMAL RETAIL SHOP PRICE AS SOLD IN ITS LOCAL AREA, plus a flat "search and find" fee of just £3. You will realise that for us to obtain single copies, we cannot purchase at wholesale prices; we then act in much the same way as a "bookfind" service, buying your title on the open market and charging a set fee for the service.

This seems to be working quite well, and we're surprised at how big the 'find' market really is. Of course, when searching for titles specially for you, you wouldn't hold us to our stated 28 days delivery ... but we try.

We promise that we will always keep the price to a minimum, and quote you first. 'Cause we want you to come back - and to tell your friends . . .

For those interested in Family History, Genealogy & Research;

Whilst we don't keep any titles specific to genealogy, (we leave those to the specialist stockists), a video on your Home Town, or the County of your parents or forebears, can be that more unusual or surprise gift.

And do visit our Family History help-page, our private family WebSite at Karoo, for a page of links specific to other sites of genealogical interest, from the Public Record Office at Kew, in London, to a People Finder for telephone and e-mail services. It opens in a separate window, so you don't lose this page - and there is a link back to this page anyway.

So, why not prelude a future visit to England, Scotland or Wales, by seeking a video of your main area of interest? Or maybe you simply want to acquire those long-wanted local scenes for your family archives. we neither offer, nor keep, any videos of an illegal or 'dubious' nature;
the only 'you-know-what' here is on titles about Essex, Sussex and Middlesex!

Nothing here should give rise to offence.

We promise to alter it. Are we Old-Fashioned? Maybe.
But every title here is one that we would be happy for our Grandmothers to view.
We have plenty of customers, without needing to corrupt children or offend anyone.

Only some of the Blitz and War History titles are
not suitable for children,
and then only for the very different reason of
not wanting to unnecessarily frighten them.

In this spot, we used to display our name and address.

We are a small, family business, run from a private house in Hull.
Unfortunately, due to home security considerations, we feel it prudent only
to give our address to those who ask for it, either by post, or by e-mail.

We wouldn't say Hull has a very bad name,
but let us say I've renamed it Dodge City.
There was very little law enforcement there too !
Our Council possibly consider this slanderous ...
Fair enough.
I consider their charge of the Police precept part
of our Council Tax payment fraudulent.
So we're all square.
Words and phrases to do with Trading Standards
and Trade Descriptions Act come to mind here.

We have, however, left our phone details.
Our Apologies if this causes inconvenience, but we find that we
usually have some correspondence or dialogue with our customers
