GATESHEAD . . . Take the ultimate walk down Memory Lane as we visit the Gateshead of yesteryear. Produced with the assistance of the Tyne & Wear Archive Service and using rare film footage from its splendid collection, this production presents a unique record of scenes and events from 20th Century Gateshead.Sequences include :- The building of the new Tyne Bridge between 1925-1928. This rare and enchanting film beautifully captures the hazardous methods used by workmen of the time. The film concludes with the official opening by King George V. Delightful colour images of the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Gateshead in 1939. Evocative colour sequences recorded during the war years vividly capture the local populous enjoying morale boosting events held at Saltwell Park. The recordings culminate with VE Day celebrations. A feast of nostalgic images recall the street parties, dances and revelry of this historic occasion. 'Exercise Tyne' is a film recalling the Fire Service during civil defence operations in 1952. Colour film recording the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Gateshead in 1954. Footage recorded between 1969-71 featuring the many changes that took place during that period. |

Included in this historic feast are rare archive films - some of which have never been seen before.The journey begins with a veritable extravaganza of dramatic images shot during the 1940s; including the floods which followed the heavy snowfalls in 1947 and the everyday life of the city's people at work, rest and play in the post-War atmosphere of peace. Moving on a decade, evocative images of the '50s are vividly recalled : illustrating the life in the city at that time. Swing into the '60s, with colour film capturing the changing fashions of an altogether livelier Gloucester. See the streets as they once looked and share the excitement of the dances which were the rage of the period. Meanwhile Beauty Queens parade and Carnivals are enjoyed. The '70s brought myriad changes as redevelopment and resculpturing took place. Colour film shot at the time features the different look and feel that the new decade brought. |

GLOUCESTER - part 2 . . . still VHS only ..... once again, we peer through the mists of time as we visit the Gloucester of yesteryear. Included in this nostalgic feast are rare archive films, never before seen. Amongst the earliest footage yet discovered, are unique images from 1932, when the citizens of Gloucester were treated to an air display by Sir Alan Cobhams' Air Circus.Locals were able to experience flying for the first time, when they were offered pleasure flights for 5 shillings. Many rare and unusual aircraft are featured. An interesting compilation of films between 1935-38 - some in colour - taken by Colonel Collett, features scenes and events around the Docks; notably images of submarines being brought to Gloucester Docks in 1937. Included is an evocative and vibrant colour film shot during the Queen's visit to Gloucester in 1955. It follows the Royal Party throughout the day as they make their way around the city to various receptions. In honour of the occasion, over 11,000 local school children were allowed the day off to gather in the Park; and were treated to the sight of the Queen being driven around in an open-top landrover. |
