046 SOUTH HOLLAND LOOKS BACK
. . 1920s, 30s, 40s more Lincolnshire localised archive film in easier going, if harsher, times. People were happier then!
Remember the Home Guard, the 1947 Floods, the first ever Tulip Parade, the Conformation Service broadcast live on TV from Spalding Parish Church?
Here's your chance to recall a wide selection of memorable local events from days gone by - or to catch up on what you missed.
Using archive film footage from many parts of the district, this special video compilation reviews life in South Holland across three generations, from a procession in Spalding beofre the First World War, to the Duke of Edinburgh's visit in 1973.
You'll see farming at Surfleet and Holbeach, in the days of working horses and steam threshing; horticulture at Quadring; Market Day in Spalding, with cattle in the streets; steam trains at Sutton Bridge; the bulb industry from the 1930s right through to the opening of Springfields.
Then there's skating on Cowbit Wash; football on the Black Swan Field; Surfleet Res in the thirties; vanished landmarks like Paul Hart's Corner; and, of course, a whole gallery of once familiar faces - and voices - from the past. 49 041 BOSTON LOOKS BACK. . . Boston Life in the first half of the Twentieth Century, preserved on film. This video compilation, much of it in colour, and including rare film footage never previously available, covers events from 1904 - the oldest known motion picture ever taken in Boston - to the Borough's celebrations during the 1951 Festival of Britain.
From the war years, there's the Home Guard of course, and the V.E. Celebrations including the May Fair. Highlights from pre-war days include the Proclamation of George V in 1910, Empire Day in 1928 with its mile-long procession of children, the Hospital fund-raising carnival in 1932, and the Silver Jubilee in 1935.
You'll see Boston at work - in fishing boats and factories, markets and machine shops; and at play - skating, swimming, rowing, bowling, grass track racing, and even flying.
Scene after scene will have you reaching for the "Still" button, as you recognise those once-familiar faces and places - vanished buildings, well-known landmarks, the shops you knew as a child, old friends, parents, brothers, sisters - and who knows, perhaps even yourself! 43 047 LOUTH LOOKS BACK
. . . Remember the Big Freeze of 1938 with its horse-drawn snow ploughs, and ice hockey on Elkington Lake? Or what about the repairs to Louth St James's in 1937, War Weapons Week in 1941, or the Soap Box Derby of 1963?
This archive video compilation includes dozens of scenes from the much loved Playhouse Newsreels, filmed by Bert Hallam and Bert Rawlings over half a century ago, together with a wealth of other motion picture material from the pre- and post-war periods. There are the Lincolnshire Shows at Louth in 1936 and 1949, a Gyrotiller at work near Skidbrooke, the Newmarket Ropewalk, the Home Guard, of course, five local schools, even a pre-war production by the Operatic Society.
Colour scenes include Kenwick Fete in 1954, RAF Manby receiving the Freedom of Louth, 1963 Carnival Week, and some excerpts from the delightful 'Ramble Round Louth', featuring peaceful countryside near Legbourne, Cawthorpe and Tathwell, filmed in the fateful Spring of 1940. Much history and nostalgia in this beautiful Wolds town. 50 043 GRANTHAM LOOKS BACK. . . Remember VE Day, the 1953 Coronation, or the Queen Mother's visit to to mark the Borough's Quincentenary? What about Read's Laundry, back in the 50s; or the fastest train in Europe, the Coronation Scot, hurtling through Grantham Station in 1937?
Rare archive footage brings back ot life a host of forgotten moments from days gone by. Kings School in the 1920s, the Aveling Barford fire of 1937, Recruiting Day in 1915, Civic Week in 1935 when hundreds of children spelt out the town's name in huge lettering. You'll see sporting events ranging from a football match in 1913 to the Pancake races of 1970; scenes from agriculture and industry; the hospital, the airfield the bus station, the ladies' keep-fit display in 1937, and even, from 1917, Grantham's first ever home movie!
It's all here - from the Hornsby Chain Tractor demonstrations of 1908 to the opening of the indoor Swimming Pool in 1971. And it's the people of Grantham who are the stars! 50 040 SKEGNESS .. Then & Now. . .
with archive footage from the Lincolnshire Film Archive: 'Skegness Then and Now' is a combination of modern video and extensive archive film footage that shows how much things have really changed in this famous seaside town.
A couple of generations ago, in the Twenties and Thirties, polished boots and three-piece suit were appropriate wear for a day in the beach, though the daring younger man might sport a cap instead of a hat. Even the children were expected to paddle and swim in all over bathing costumes.
By the Sixties, the picture was very different, but holiday-makers could still expect to sit in neatly arranged rows of deck chairs and listen to a three-piece orchestra. Scenes of Butlins, the pier and the Figure 8 feature prominently in the video, along with Carnivals and Beauty Contests from days gone by and the sort of holiday amusements that have long since passed into History.
But the comparison between old and new reveal that at least two things don't seem to have altered: the donkeys look pretty much the same as they always did, and even if the holiday makers of days gone by dressed in a way we shouldn't care to now, it's plain to see that they weren't having any less fun. A must for all who remember Skeggy! 45 041 800 YEARS of KING'S LYNN. . . 85 PT7 LINCOLN'S RAILWAY .. 150 . . .

... ... achives from 1930 to 1960, The Second World War was a watershed in British farming. In the 1930s, the skilled human hand and the power of the horse still reigned supreme; but in the rush to produce food to beat the U-boats, traditional methods were swept away. Fifteen years after the war, sophisticated new implements and the concentrated, tireless work of the tractor had all but replaced them.
Drawing on archive film shot entirely on working farms in Lincolnshire, 'Farming on Film 1930-60' records the change from the days of the scythe, the horse-drawn binder and the steam threshing set to the all consuming combine, and from the traditional mixed farming to the large specialised units of recent years.
Highlights include footage of local and county shows, a primitive Claas combine, a gyrotiller at work, steam threshing and ploughing, and a wartime cattle market. Also featured is early daffodil and tulip farming and the famous Spalding Flower Parade. The real stars though are the farmers and farmhands, working in all conditions and all weathers to do what farmers have done for years - care for the land and bring home the harvest.
Written & narrated by Alan Stennett.

. . . achives from 1955 to 1979, is the second in this series. Scenes of horse and tractor drilling, corn binding and carting, threshing and stack building sit side by side with images of self-propelled combines, automatic bailers, men riding the bale sledge while haymaking, and a range of attachments that made even the most humble tractor a do-it-all machine. 58 090 FARMING ON FILM Vol III . . . 1947 - 1979
Farming has been 'The Basic Industry' ever since man started growing his own food rather than gathering it from the wild, but the description took on special meaning in Britain during the wars of the 20th century, when enemy action looked like blocking our supplies from overseas.
In the years after WWII, the nation decided that it could never take that risk again, and encouraged farmers to modernise and increase output. This production uses archive motion picture film from the 1940s to the 1970s, often taken by the farmers themselves, to show how farming responded to that call by introducing new machinery, techniques and marketing that reduced the need for man- and horse-power in the fields and on the farms.
Rare archive coverage of the first post-war Royal Show in 1947, sets the scene for the changes that are to come. Early material includes a traditional pig-killing, teaching farming techniques to 1950s schoolboys, potato planting by hand and early sugar beet lifting machinery.
The modernisation of green pea harvesting and beet and potato production, the change from extensive to intensive livestock production and innovations in material handling are all covered by films that show historic machinery hard at work in the right settings for their time.
Written and narrated by Alan Stennett 55 mins Vid001 FENLAND FARMING 1955
. . . Fenland Farming '55 is a fascinating glimpse of a world gone by - a year in the life of a Lincolnshire farm at a time when horse-drawn carts brought trays of seed potatoes to a field where a gang of a dozen men planted them by hand, while a tractor driven ridger closed the rows behind them. We see grain crops harvested using a binder and a combine, muck spread by horse and cart, five different types of working machines, and chemicals applied to crops by a helicopter - a very modern technique for its time.
We see livestock, and in the fields, potatoes, wheat, sugar beet, mustard and peas are the crops for the year. Some corn was still stooked, stacked and threshed in the winter, although the new Massey Harris combine, fresh from the United States, was about to render such skills, and those of the stack-thatcher, completely obsolete.
Home Farm was and still is a fine example of fenland farming, and thanks to Mr Piccaver and his 16mm film camera, we are able to look back at a time when two agricultural traditions ran side by side, one coming in as the other was going out, but both equally fascinating. Nothing filmed before or after could have captured the rich variety of machinery and farm skills, and it should be in the collection of every farm fan or social historian.
sorry, no VHS 55 mins Vid082 A DOWNLAND FARM IN THE FIFTIES
. . . From the makers of the award winning Farming on Film series comes this fascinating new archive video showing life on a Sussex Farm at the time of significant change.
More than 30 men were employed at harvest, with a range of machinery including several tractors, binders, reapers, a threshing set and a flax puller seen at work. Stacks were made and thatched by hand, with the aid of a boom and grab to lift the hay from the carts. Crops featured include cereals, flax, hay and silage as well as root crops for winter feed.
A unique look back at a time when the English countryside was a busier place.
Written & narrated by Alan Stennett.
sorry, no VHS 55 mins Vid071 A FARM IN WAR AND PEACE
. . . Situated within the walls of a twelfth century castle is a farmstead called Castle Farm. For nearly a thousand years the Sherriff Hutton community has sheltered under its war-ravaged walls.
In the 1940s, the desperate need for food took it back to war, when Castle Farm was mobilised to help feed the nation. Many of its workers went away to fight, but production was maintained with the help of Italian and German prisoners of war. This video features archive film footage of PoWs at work in Castle Farm, as well as showing the changes that took place in the 1950s and 60s as it moved from wartime controls to become a modern dairy unit.
A dairy herd of the now rare Ayrshire cattle, vintage farm machinery including Fordson and Ferguson tractors and one of the earliest Land Rovers are all featured.
The video also includes interviews with the family who owned the farm, and people who worked there and material from Eden Camp, the local PoW camp, now a WWII museum.
Written and Narrated by Alan Stennett.

& AVIATION 021 BOMBER COUNTY
. . . A rural population coming to terms with the War
The Home Front is the long awaited video about wartime Lincolnshire. In spite of the difficulties and wartime shortages, local film-makers managed to produce a detailed record of thie dramatic period in the County's history. Drawing on their film material, this video covers the period from the last desparate months of peace, right through to the Victory celebrations of 1945.
Among the memorable scenes featured in this video are RAF Lancasters operating out of Lincolnshire bomber bases; Air Raid Precaution (ARP) and incendiary bomb excercises; War Weapons Week and aluminium collection for Spitfires; sand-bagging of buildings and construction of air raid shelters; arrival of evacuees from the cities; rationing of food, fuel and other essential supplies, the British Restaurant and TocH organisations in action; and the Home Guard recruitment, training and disbandment.
Also features extracts from the film 'Country Town' which was produced in 1941 for general cinema release to show how the countryside was doing its bit for the war effort.

Yorkshire's contribution to victory in the Second World War cannot be
overstated. While their families suffered at home, Yorkshire's servicemen were
fighting in all theatres of war. Yorkshire trawlers hunted submarines and
swept mines, her merchant seamen risked all on the Murmansk Run and the flat
lands of Yorkshire played host to the bomber crews who carried the fight into
the heart of Germany. The Free French were billeted in Yorkshire prior to
their triumphant return home.

British Intelligence knew that a massive air raid was planned that night but no warning was given. Hundreds of men, women and children suffered and died as the Germans devastated "Mr Churchill's War Machine", the Daimler, the Humber, Armstrong's, Sterling's, Morris and the Alvis plants. Along with these industrial plants the blitz took out Coventry's magnificent medieval centre and one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe.
This DVD is dedicated to the people of Coventry whose loss and suffering at the hands of the Luftwaffe came to symbolise the awfulness of war.

This programme documents the year long celebrations that took place within King’s Lynn and the surrounding area. These events were arranged by community organisations and range from, the King’s Lynn Festival, the Emerich twinning club, the proclamation of The Mart and a visit by a traditional German Hansa Cog.
The highlight for the whole year was the Charter Carnival that took place in September on the walks. This official opening ceremony was led by the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. The Charter Carnival takes us back through history to medieval times, where you can witness the skill and bravery of the grand medieval jousting tournament. The celebrations continued into the evening, when musical entertainment and one of West Norfolk’s largest firework displays took place.
Celebrating 800 years of King’ Lynn is a celebration of King’s Lynn and the community that make up this towns rich history and heritage, its Golden Past as well as looking forward to its future. This programme will become a permanent record for this important mile stone in this town’s history.
The programme is narrated by Stephen Fry.
