NAVAL VIDEO TIME CAPSULES
The ROYAL NAVY IN WORLD WAR II

a set of 12 astonishing videos made by the late Roland Smith.
now released on 7 DVD's.

MR ROLAND SMITH OF ESCRICK, NEAR YORK, . . .
the maker of this fine set of Naval videos,
passed away in March of 2002, aged 73.

As well as being a tribute to all the men who served,
and to those who were lost, the original 12 volumes long stood
as a memorial to a fine Englishman, whose dedication
and attention to detail will always be appreciated by
all who view any of the titles in this incredible set.

Since Roland's death, it seemed appropriate to transcribe
the brochure he enclosed with every NVTC video he sent out.
It explains how the set came about, the difficulties he had with the
archives at the Admiralty, and why he felt so strongly
this archive should be saved for the nation.

Read Roland's own words . .
Press Alt +F4 to close when done.

Those 12 volumes of unique archive ciné,
are now 7 volumes on DVD,
where some have been doubled up to give
2 hours on some discs, and 3 hours on another.

They are ex-Admiralty & Imperial War Museum films,
plus some rare private film, all edited by one ex-RN rating
to tell the story of the Royal Navy in the Second World War,
and not generally available in shops.

For veterans & historians alike, these are of
special interest to Family Historians tracing and understanding
their relative's wartime naval service.
Thanks to Roland's expertise, so many ships are identified
and named you can be sure you are seeing
what he says you're seeing.
Above all, they reek the atmosphere of their time.

This masterpiece of editing to video
has preserved for the nation almost all of the known ciné to date
that is NOT held by the BBC & Pathe News, etc.
How it has been saved is a story in itself.
These DVD's are "the business" . . .

We are proud once again to offer each volume
at the prices listed below

There are no other Royal Navy DVD's like these.
All these volumes show many more ships
than we can possibly list here, though we'll try.

Naval cap tallies, those strips of black silk (in memory of Nelson)
that had the ship's name on, or in wartime usually just 'HM SHIPS',
were printed in gold. When you've seen just one of these videos,
you'll know why all the ships' named below
ought to be printed in pure gold . . the list of HM ships
on these DVD's reads like a Roll of Honour . .

KING GEORGE V Class Battleships

A totally unique DVD celebrating the five battleships of the King George V Class. Highlights include the KING GEORGE V being launched, at anchor in Scapa Flow, a look below decks and sailing in wild seas in the Arctic Circle in 1942. The PRINCE OF WALES is featured with extensive coverage of her ferrying Winston Churchill to Newfoundland as well as sailing for the Far East and with the REPULSE at Singapore. The ANSON is seen on the Clyde sailing for Scapa Flow, while the HOWE is seen being fitted out, during her commissioning service and exercising her guns.

Part 1: KING GEORGE V Class Battleships Apart from HMS VANGUARD, the King George V Class were the last battleships to be commissioned by the Royal Navy and played a major role in the Second World War. A total of five King George V Class battleships were built - the HOWE, PRINCE OF WALES, DUKE OF YORK, the ANSON and, of course, the KING GEORGE V.

In this totally unique DVD, Royal Navy historian, the late Roland R Smith, gathered together much rare and previously unseen film footage of these magnificent warships from diverse archives. The focus is on film material from the years 1941 and 1942, but other rare and historic material is also included. Highlights include the KING GEORGE V being launched, at anchor in Scapa Flow and sailing with the RENOWN, DUKE OF YORK, VICTORIOUS and KENYA in wild seas in the Arctic Circle in 1942. Also included is a fascinating contemporary film account of life below her decks.

The PRINCE OF WALES, which joined the HOOD in fighting the Bismarck, is featured with extensive coverage of her ferrying Winston Churchill to Newfoundland for a historic meeting with President Roosevelt and sailing through a vast merchant convoy on the return voyage. Other scenes featuring the PRINCE OF WALES include her sailing for the Far East and with the REPULSE at Singapore. She would later be sunk off Malaya and a survivor provides a harrowing account of her sinking.

The fourth of her class to be completed, the ANSON, is seen on the Clyde sailing for Scapa Flow in June 1942, while the HOWE is seen being fitted out in 1942 and there is coverage of her commissioning service and scenes of her exercising her guns en route. Other ships of note featured include the battlecruiser HOOD, with film of her at anchor at Scapa Flow, rare material recording life below decks and an interview with one of her few survivors after her ill-fated encounter with the Bismarck. The battleship RODNEY is also included, with the 1st Lord of the Admiralty addressing her crew after the sinking of the Bismarck.

IN COLOUR -- A SAILOR'S VIEW

Colour film footage of the Royal Navy during the Second World War is exceptionally rare. Official cameramen shot little colour footage and filming by members of the ship's crew was strictly forbidden. However, this rule was occasionally broken and a number of officers did shoot their own colour film while serving. Their 'home movies' now provide some of the most remarkable and important colour film of the navy during the war years. Royal Navy historian, the late Roland R Smith, produced this totally unique compilation of these colour films. Much of the material has never been seen before and is all the more remarkable for being filmed pre-war or in the war's early years.

Part 3: IN COLOUR -- A SAILOR'S VIEW Precious pre-war film records the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla in Malta and on exercise in the autumn of 1939, and the ships of the First Battle Squadron and the First Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean that same year. From spring 1939, comes rare colour film of the warships of the China Station. There are colour scenes of the navy during the Norwegian campaign of 1940, Malta convoys (including 'Operation Pedestal' and air attack sequences), and splendid colour film of ocean liners converted into troop ships and under escort. Other highlights include a colour film of the carrier EAGLE sinking, the LAFOREY shelling Madagascar and dramatic film of the NELSON sailing under the Forth Bridge, exercising her big guns and scenes of life on board ship.

Among the warships captured here in colour are the carriers ILLUSTRIOUS, INDOMITABLE, FURIOUS AND GLORIOUS, the battleships RODNEY, WARSPITE, BARHAM, NELSON and QUEEN ELIZABETH, the cruiser BIRMINGHAM, the destroyers ESKIMO, ASHANTE, COSSACK and HERMIONE and the mine-laying submarine GRAMPUS.

this DVD is a remake of the VHS programme
COLOUR CAMERA AT SEA ... WWII ... thus we have: NELSON & KENT. Destroyers IVANHOE and LAFOREY. Home Waters to Far East: only surviving film of loss of ARK ROYAL & EAGLE, plus rescue of EAGLE survivors by LAFOREY & LOOKOUT. 1st Battle Sqn & 3rd Flotilla off Malta in 1939. Submarine GRAMPUS. DVD4: PART 4: ... of 7
WAR IN THE FROZEN NORTH

Drawing on rare and previously unseen archive film materials from diverse archives, Royal Navy historian Roland R. Smith chronicles the fiery destruction of the British aircraft carrier the GLORIOUS - and the Royal Navy's relentless thirst for revenge which culminated in the destruction of the German battleship responsible - the Scharnhorst.

Part 4 : WAR IN THE FROZEN NORTH War in the Frozen North chronicles the story of the carrier GLORIOUS from 1935 to her sinking during the ill-fated Norwegian Campaign of 1940. Using rare film taken by one of the ship's officer's, the GLORIOUS is seen operating Nimrods, Baffins, Ospreys, Seals and Fairey Ills off her flight deck, docking in Malta, experimenting with early catapult launch technology and enjoying joint sea exercises with the carrier COURAGEOUS and battlecruiser HOOD in the Atlantic.

The Norwegian naval campaign of 1940 is covered in detail, with highlights including the RENOWN firing her big guns, the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla in Norwegian waters, coverage of troop convoys, scenes of the bomb-damaged RESOLUTION and German air attacks. In June 1940, the GLORIOUS sailed for home and was caught by a German raider force which included the Scharnhorst. A camera on the deck of the Scharnhorst vividly captures her fiery last minutes...

It was three and a half years later before the Royal Navy finally exacted revenge at the Battle of North Cape, where the battleship DUKE OF YORK and a host of other RN ships including the JAMAICA, NORFOLK, BELFAST, SHEFFIELD, SAVAGE and SCORPION sprang an elaborate trap on the Scharnhorst. Included here are senior officers who took part recounting the action for the cameras including C-in-C Admiral Bruce Fraser.

This title is the former Part 5 "TRAGEDY & TRIUMPH" in the NVTC series, and thus shows :
GLORIOUS on Med Com in 1935/37, operating various types of aircraft, and on exercise with Home Fleet. HOOD + REPULSE on early wartime patrol. RENOWN. grim Norwegian 1940 affair, RESOLUTION bombed in Ofot Fjiord, also; VALIANT ~ RODNEY ~ VINDICTIVE ~ YORK ~ ARK ROYAL ~ WARSPITE ~ AURORA ~ GALATEA ~ FURIOUS ~ ENTERPRISE ~ HOTSPUR ~ FAME ~ FAULKNOR, etc. Rare Scharnhorst & Gneisenau sinking GLORIOUS, plus scenes of ARDENT & ACASTA. The Battle of The North Cape with; JAMAICA ~ DUKE OF YORK ~ SHEFFIELD ~ BELFAST ~ NORFOLK, etc, and various destroyers that took part in that action. From the snow-covered decks in the Arctic to their triumphant return to Scapa Flow and landing the Scharnhorst's survivors. Also rare sound footage on DUKE of YORK'S quarterdeck of Admirals Fraser and Burnett and other personnel.

DVD5: Part 5 : ... of 7
BRITISH CONVOYS

This disc is a compilation of two NVTC volumes, no6 : PERILOUS WATERS, and no7 : THE HAZARDS OF RUSSIAN CONVOYS. Compiled from diverse archive sources, these two documentaries by Royal Navy Historian, the late Roland R. Smith, vividly capture two very different types of British convoy during the Second World War.

The first film looks at the Atlantic convoys and the titanic struggle against the U-boat menace, while the second paints a vivid portrait of the Russian convoys that had to sail through the most horrific of conditions at sea in order to keep the Soviet Union going in its war against the Nazis. Part 5: BRITISH CONVOYS

PERILOUS WATERS: The Battle of the Atlantic was essential for Britain's very survival. If the sea-lanes could not be kept open, the nation would quickly run out of vital supplies. This film concentrates on the Royal Navy's role in protecting the merchant convoys and with the use of dramatic German archive material - the U-boats that stalked them. Highlights include a film record of a Flower class corvette setting out for convoy duties, scenes of the collection of 50 American destroyers from Canada in 1940 and convoys rallying in Nova Scotia. There is also extensive coverage of the exploits of the 2nd Escort Group under Captain Frederic John Walker, C.B., D.S.O, including anti-submarine actions, their triumphant return to Liverpool after sinking six U-boats on a single voyage and Captain Walker's funeral ceremony and burial at sea.

All events re Battle of the Atlantic, thus Flower Class Corvettes, Frigates, Destroyers, a feature on four stackers with crews sailing via a transport liner to Halifax, Nova Scotia, plus commissioning and return Atlantic voyage. The Merchant Service, more scenes in Halifax NS, including an "R" class battleship, and tribute to RCN . . . plus U-Boats, scenes include Capt. Walker's escort group, STARLING ~ MAGPIE ~ WILD GOOSE ~ WREN, all hunting U-boat, with dramatic scenes of the end of the U-boat, landing survivors at Gladstone Dock, with masses of cheering Wrens. Admiral Max Horton and First Sea Lord inspect ship's companies, with interviews aboard STARLING. Sudden tragic death of Capt. Walker, funeral cortege through Liverpool & burial at sea from HESPERUS flying STARLING'S tattered battle ensign as final tribute.

THE HAZARDS OF RUSSIAN CONVOYS: Re-supplying the Soviet Union by sea meant convoys braving some of the most atrocious sailing conditions imaginable and running the gauntlet of German warships, U-boats and bombers. Mainly based on a rare film record of convoy PQ18, this gripping film vividly illustrates those hazards. PQ18 set sail in September 1942 on a 16-day voyage to the White Sea. It essentially comprised 40 merchant ships and 16 escort destroyers plus corvettes, trawlers and minesweepers. Along the way, the cameras recorded the atrocious conditions, frantic anti-submarine attacks by destroyers and waves of German bombers sweeping overhead, providing a unique film record of a Russian convoy from beginning to end.

Almost all known film of Russian Convoys is here. Oppressive weather conditions, snow, ice, howling gales, as warships and merchantmen struggle ever onwards, the film being occasionally complemented by the irrepressible wry humour of the ships' crews. PQ18 under air attack as filmed from SCYLLA. German warships plus U-Boats attacking. Survivors being hauled from the water. So many ships, almost too numerous to list. Many Merchant survivors being transferred to SCYLLA from minesweeper HARRIER. Harrowing footage ! You'll see just why the survivors of these men wear white berets at Remembrance Services . . it certainly wasn't for fashion!

DVD6: PART 6 : ... of 7
OPERATIONS TORCH & NEPTUNE

This is a compilation of two NVTC programmes, formerly Parts 6 & 7, listed below.

Operations Torch and Neptune were two of the largest, most spectacular and successful operations conducted by the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Using only rare and previously unseen archive material from diverse sources, Royal Navy historian, the late Roland R. Smith, has compiled unique and extensive film records of these truly colossal naval operations. They stand alone as the best available - by far - film accounts of the operations and the ships that took part in them.

THE GREAT ARMADA – 'OPERATION TORCH': Operation Torch was the codename given to the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942. This film collects together much of the best surviving footage of the Royal Navy's participation, from the sailing of the core Battleships of Force H - the NELSON, DUKE OF YORK and RENOWN - from the Clyde to their rendezvous with the carriers FORMIDABLE and VICTORIOUS and their journey into the Mediterranean. The film also follows an assault convoy and takes the story through to the shielding role adopted by Force H after the landings. Highlights include Fleet Air Arm Seafires, Martlets, Fulmars and Albacores in American markings, scenes of Force H under air attack, the battleship RODNEY in action against coastal batteries and a royal visit to the Battleship HOWE at Algiers.

Part 6: OPERATIONS TORCH & NEPTUNE Most extensive film yet of Fleet Air Arm, hustle and bustle of flight-deck activity; plus RODNEY ~ NELSON ~ RENOWN ~ DUKE of YORK ~ SHEFFIELD ~ AURORA ~ 8th Submarine Flotilla + MAIDSTONE. Carriers FORMIDDABLE ~ VICTORIOUS ~ FURIOUS ~ and various light escort carriers, including the ill-fated AVENGER. Ends with inspection of smartly-turned-out ship's company of HOWE by HM The King at Algiers. Altogether, there were some 170 warships and 350 merchantmen involved, and this film gives a good overall impression of the size and importance of the operation.

REFLECTIONS OF 'OPERATION NEPTUNE': Operation Neptune was the code name given to the naval operations within the overall plan for the Allied invasion of Normandy. In all, some 6,833 vessels participated in the operation and the sheer size of events is captured in some breathtaking footage featured here. From early preparations, through embarkation, the great rendezvous off the coast of the Isle of Wight and the mass steaming for France, the film captures the scale and grandeur of the operation up to the D-Day landings and then continues to look at naval operations over the next month. Among the hundreds of warships and support ships featured are the cruisers SIRIUS, DISPATCH, DIADEM and BELFAST, the destroyers FURIOUS, SCORPION, ONSLAUGHT, VIRGO, COTSWOLD, GLASGOW and ENTERPRISE and the battleships RODNEY and WARSPITE.

Ships shown in REFLECTIONS OF OPERATION NEPTUNE

FURY ~ WARSPITE ~ RODNEY ~ RESOLUTION ~ ARETHUSA ~ AJAX ~ SCYLLA ~ GLASGOW ~ ENTERPRISE ~ FROBISHER ~ SIRIUS ~ BELFAST plus more "small ships" & Landing Craft than can be listed here! But we can name BOADICEA ~ ONSLOW ~ ORIBI ~ OFFA ~ ONSLAUGHT ~ KELVIN ~ VIRAGO ~ ULYSSES ~ URANIA ~ FAULKNER ~ UNDAUNTED ~ ALBRIGHTON ~ FERNIE ~ GLAISDALE ~ STEVENSTONE ~ IMPULSIVE ~ KEMPENFELT ~ and the sad end of HMS FURY. Difficult to list the entire content of this dramatic footage.

DVD7: PART 7: ... of 7
BRITISH PACIFIC & EAST INDIES FLEETS

This totally unique three hour DVD is a real tour-de-force, being a compilation of the last three volumes of Roland's films, Parts 10, 11, & 12. They are here shown as BP&EIF Phases 1, 2, and 3. They offer the ultimate film record of these fleets, their fighting ships and men. They feature only original archive film from start to finish. During the Second World War, the East Indies and British Pacific Fleets were sometimes disparagingly referred to as the 'Forgotten Fleets', being akin to their fighting army colleagues in the 14th Army. Their contribution to the war effort was somewhat overshadowed by naval actions elsewhere, and both their ships and engagements were comparatively rarely recorded by newsreel and combat cameramen.

Produced and narrated by Royal Navy historian, the late Roland R. Smith, this totally unique three-hour DVD now offers the ultimate film record of these fleets, their fighting ships and men. Drawn from diverse sources, and featuring only original archive film from start to finish, it includes considerable amounts of rare and previously unseen material. People who have never seen these films before, relatives of veterans, are usually truly astonished at their contents.

Part 7: BRITISH PACIFIC / EAST INDIES FLEETS PHASE ONE: Starting in 1942, this film features a host of British fighting ships including the RESOLUTION, WARSPITE, DEVONSHIRE, MAURITIUS, GAMBIA, FROBISHER, CATTERICK, NIZAM, PALADIN, RAMILLIES, MALAYA, ILLUSTRIOUS, INDOMITABLE, HERMIONE, LOOKOUT, LAFOREY, QUEEN ELIZABETH, VALIANT, RENOWN, VICTORIOUS, HOWE, LONDON and KING GEORGE V. Highlights include royal inspections of the carrier INDEFATIGABLE and battleship KING GEORGE V, coverage of the large scale Fleet Air Arm assault on Palembang, the ILLUSTRIOUS sailing with the US carrier SARATOGA, Japanese air attacks on the BPF and the Sakashima One operations, plus a Refuel At Sea by the British Pacific Fleet, the French RICHELIEU, the HOWE in assault on Sabang, and a visit to Sydney. Detailed look at the Fleet Train Base at Manus. And, of course, much more.

PHASE TWO: Includes colour footage in 1945, with daily air strikes. Fighting ships featured include the carriers INDEFATIGABLE (receives direct Kamikaze attack on the flight deck), IMPLACABLE, FORMIDABLE, and INDOMITABLE, and both VICTORIOUS and ILLUSTRIOUS receive glancing blows from Kamikazes. Escort carriers STALKER and EMPEROR, the battleship KING GEORGE V, cruisers LONDON, NEWCASTLE, SUSSEX AND PHOEBE and destroyers QUADRANT, QUEENSBOROUGH AND WESSEX, and destroyer ULSTER immobilised by a near-hit. Highlights include glorious extended colour sequences, carrier action with Seafires and Hellcats and film of Kamikaze attacks on the BPF. Also footage of the East Indies Fleet, some of the small escort carriers being seen in this programme and many other ships of the fleet. And a great deal more . .

PHASE THREE: Admiral Brind commanding the 4th Cruiser Squadron, SWIFTSURE, comes alongside KGV. The East Indies Fleet features with new flagship NELSON, seen at sea with SUSSEX and two escort carriers AMEER and EMPRESS during operation "Livery". Other fighting ships featured include the carriers VICTORIOUS and IMPLACABLE, plus INDEFATIGABLE with flight deck scenes, also seen taking on light stores and mail, hockey recreation on the armoured flight deck and eventual return to the operational area where she ranges and flys-off her various aircraft and later battling through a typhoon. Light fleet carriers GLORY, COLOSSUS, VENERABLE and VENGEANCE, Battleships KING GEORGE V, HOWE, DUKE OF YORK and ANSON, cruisers SWIFTSURE and BERMUDA and the destroyer UNDAUNTED. Other destroyers TROUBRIDGE, TENACIOUS and TERMAGANT, sail to Guam, plus footage of Australian-manned destroyer NORMAN. US Admiral Nimitz inspecting the KING GEORGE V at Guam. Highlights include air-to-air film of a Fairey Firefly raid on the Japanese home islands.

NB: NOTE ON PRICE INCREASES & POSTAGE :

We do apologise for having to increase the prices of these titles. But we must point out the price hasn't changed since first coming out on DVD several years ago now, and with the recent rise in VAT to 20%, plus extra postage costs (which we still have to pay although we do full sets at nil postage, ie, post paid) we've had no choice but to raise prices.

The old basic price of £12.99 has gone to £13.25, and those that were £14.99 have gone to £15.30. That increase is entirely due to the Jan 2010 VAT increase. We hope to hold our postage at £1.50 for now, but that has also risen sharply, and our postage will have to go to £2.00 per separate item by mid-summer.

For 3 or 4 titles on the same order to the same address would get a postage discount; ie we would not charge 4 x £1.50, or the full £6. For 4 together, we would charge £4, which is more realistic including the bag or box they're delivered in.

Even now, at £100 a set, we still think they are great value today. We know Roland would have thought so, as would the many thousands of people across the globe that have already seen these titles and appreciated how different they are. They're a very BRITISH production for a start! And made by a real Matelot with a knowledge of his navy for a second. And the footage is historic .. and tells the visual story of these great ships and the men who manned them. Yes, they were men, just men, and real men ... no girls aboard in those days. And so many paid for their service with their lives. This set honours them here, at whatever price they come out at.

WARNING:

these NVTC videos are often harrowing.
If you took part, they'll almost certainly bring back many memories.
One of our customers even saw some old shipmates in the
British Pacific Fleet, men who were later lost in action.

The Late
ROLAND SMITH, R.N., Silver Cross of St George.

We were delighted to announce at the time that the quality
magazine for all Anglophiles, "This England", had awarded
the Silver Cross of St George back in 1997 to the
maker of these naval titles, the late Roland Smith of York,
for his efforts in preserving the nation's naval ciné archive.

His was a one-man battle in itself, fighting die-hards
in the Admiralty, shortage of cash, and old father time
as 50yr-old ciné film was allowed to rot away
in damp Admiralty basements !

Roland sadly passed away suddenly in March of 2002.
I'm sure history, posterity, and all RN veterans of WW2,
will always be deeply indebted to Roland's memory.

Read Roland's own words . .
on how and why he made this set of incredible naval titles.

Roland Smith was a great believer in keeping the memories of these ships and their crews alive, and in memory of his contribution, we will offer some space here to list Special Links to other websites created for and by old shipmates for the benefit of their own shipmates.

It's only a small gesture, but feel free to write and let me know of any website you feel would be worthy of listing here. If it helps just one person get in touch with some old mates, or even to find out what eventually happened to them, it will have been worth it.

Shipmates' Links

HMS Gambia Association
HMS Gambia Association
An award-winning and informative site to an obviously happy ship. A great deal of interest here on this smart Colony Class Cruiser of World War II, and a site well worth a visit.

Site run by Bill Hartland, a self-confessed ex-Bootneck Bandy, and naturally, site has the best music to introduce it .. .

HMS Cavalier .. the Royal Navy's last World War II destroyer, now preserved at the old HM Dockyard, Chatham. A superb site, lots of photos, and a must for any matelot, whatever ship he served on.

HMS Edinburgh . . . page created and maintained by David Orton for this memorable cruiser, famously lost en-route to Russia.

HMS Howe .. & sisters ..... a really lovely collection of memories and detailed information of what I think were the smartest and sleekest warships ever built for the Royal Navy. We'll not see their like again.

World War Cruiser Operations . . . a superb site, even if the name is a bit of a misnomer. For the site covers everything naval, from carriers down to destroyers and subs ... an amazing number of good quality pics, dozens of video clips, many sound clips of veterans telling their own experience, and a full indexing facility to search for any ship or action. At over 300 pages, it's one of the most comprehensive on the web. I spent a fascinating hour there, and only saw a fraction of what there is. I only forced myself to leave because it was the middle of the night and I needed some sleep! So be warned, it's compulsive viewing for naval buffs. I also get a lot of family history enquiries re warships, so will be referring same to this site frequently, as well as looking in again for my own interest.
