OMNIBUS : LONDON BUS & LONDON BUS II
. . . Double disc of two very popular titles,
in the series "YESTERDAY'S BRITAIN No40" ...
... tells the the story of buses in London starting with Omnibus 150, a film made in 1979 to celebrate 150 years since George Shillibeer ran the first regular bus service in the capital. It traces the development of the bus from horse buses, to motor buses and on to the purpose built buses designed by London Transport, the RT followed by the Routemaster.
The DVD also contains Overhaul, a film made in 1957 showing how London's familiar RT bus was overhauled at purpose built works in Aldenham. The Nine Road (1976), follows a day in the operation of a Routemaster service across central London, route 9 from Liverpool Street to Mortlake. Getting To Grips (1984) features a driver learning the technique of controlling his Routemaster bus on a greasy wet surface the famous Chiswick skid pan, which closed down about six months after the film was made.
A Century of Buses, a parade held in Hyde Park to mark the centenary of the LGOC (General) in 1956. This was also the first appearance on the roads of the capital of the new Routemaster bus. One for One (1963) describes the process of overhauling mechanical units from London's bus fleet in Chiswick Works. Country Buses (1948) demonstrate the freedom of the country around London and how London Transport's Country Buses serve the new towns and growing population of the counties surrounding the capital. STL, T and RT types abound in this film.
This programme concludes with especially recorded recollections by Colin Curtis, who worked in the Routemaster design team, using some previously unreleased footage of RM1 on the Army's test track at Chobham and on display to Londoners in Horse Guard's parade in 1956.
Terrific value for over 2 hours of unforgettable nostalgia.
