PROFILE: Managing Director and Principal Consultant

RICHARD MARSHALL, MA (Cantab), CEng, FIEE

Founded Richard Marshall Limited in 1996 to undertake rf and EMC-related electronic design, consultancy & training.

From 1986 to 1996 he was Technical Director of Rotork Instruments, where he lead the product design team and also held specific responsibilities for personnel and quality. The company designed and manufactured Analogue and Digital Control systems, Data Collection systems, and safety-critical protection systems for industrial processes together with signal conditioning and local-area-network products.

As a member of the IEE's professional groups on Electronic Design and EMC he has organised and chaired colloquia on "Measurements we could not make without a micro", on "EMC and Circuit design", and on "EMC of software". He has lectured widely on EMC and on Safety-Critical Systems. As a member of the new professional network on EMC he is touring the IEE local centres with a lecture “Power Line Telecommunications: Bane or Bonanza”.

He has published 38 technical papers and is named as inventor or co-inventor on 43 patent applications, many of which are as much concerned with physics as with electronics, and several of which have supported money-making products.

He worked for Rank-Xerox Ltd for twelve years, initially recruiting and managing a 46man design team and gaining considerable expertise in photocopiers, facsimile machines, and office computers and networks. He managed discussions between the academic community and the Company's patent agents. Later, he was involved in a number of million-dollar international projects and travelled widely, representing European interests in design, standards, production, and field service and working with design teams in the US and Japan. He represented the company on the council of the European Computer Manufacturers Association and on its EMC technical committee.

Currently he represents the Radio Society of Great Britain on BSI EMC committees GEL210/11 and GEL210/12. He is a UK delegate to the IEC TC77WG10 immunity committee and a member of a task force of CISPR/A WG1 that is concerned with cable impedance management.

Earlier experience included the printing, plastic-moulding and aerospace industries, patent litigation, electrostatics, and gas chromatography. He has had a lifelong interest in radio communication.
