Westward Cross Country League, Tiverton, 13/02/1988

Back to Tiverton again but this time a different course and venue but still with a ploughed field. Several seniors missed this one because of the run the following day at Weston Super Mare (mentioning no names). Anyway to those who did run well done for the good positions gained.

St Valentine's Day Massacre, Weston Super Mare, 14/02/1988

Possibly the year's highlight - a well organised run with a good after sales service espcially as the Senior men took over the Tropicana bar for the 2nd year running. Anyway, the race was 12 miles of not very nice terrain with a slippery slope of about 400 metres long and a gradient of nearly 1:1 of which I am reliably informed that nobody ran up but several people came down!
Leading the club home was Micky Baddick. Excellent performances from Gordie, Stump, Alan Waters and the ever improving Clem Stevens.

English Cross Country Championships, Newark, 20/02/1988

I am proud to be able to give you the results of what must be the pinnacle of the club's achievement so far, in our first showing at this event.

The club gained 162nd team from 230 which to many of you who don't run doesn't seem much, but I can tell you it's very good.

2136 runners finished (from 2600) in this 3x3 mile lap course running through some pretty stinky stuff which some pigs had left lying around. Over 400 dropped out. Mike Baddick led the club in as he always does in 908th place, from Alan Saunders who also made the top 1000.

Special thanks to Baz for driving the minibus and to Mike Baddick's relations for looking after us so well.

Postnote :- This event took place at the same time as the Winter Olympics and our intrepid Tubby borrowed Alan Saunder's spectacles and donned a new pose, the likeness to Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards was quite remarkable. I am currently trying to set up a meeting between the two for the summer so they can both go down Westward Ho! and do their stuff (posing of course).

Quite a cold day although overcast but still our club turn out in force and the positions verify out strength. Mentions in dispatches for Jocelyn Bartlett for putting on her fast legs for a change (keep it up Jocelyn); Vicki Pennington in her first outing; Karen Chapman for getting ever closer to Marilyn Blair; and Craig Robinson so near but not quite (one more shredded wheat next time).
