Saltash Half Marathon, Saltash, 06/05/2001

The smaller of the day's two half marathons was graced by our Keith Bowden, who came 89th squeaking in under 2 hours in 1:59:44


Great West Run, Exeter, 06/05/2001

The largest race in the West Country was won by a world class Kenyan, but the Blues were not far behind. Jon Parkinson, running a pb, finished well inside the top ten, with Steve Davis in 20th. Just behind Steve was Vicky Pincombe, 1st lady home with Helen Parkinson completing a fine family day with 3rd lady.

Second BAAC Handicap, Bideford, 09/05/2001

Another excellent turnout for the second race of the series. For the second race in a row, a first-timer took the junior event, Callie running clear of the field. Over the longer course, Marion Lawrence and Andy Watts were (at least) one step ahead of the handicapper (we'll sort that out next time!) to pick up the vets awards, while at senior level Stuart had a well-deserved win in the mens, and Helen on her return took the ladies.

Devon Track & Field Championships, Braunton, 12 & 13/05/2001

A very different couple of days at the Braunton track, with summery weather on the Saturday giving way to a typical Braunton day of overcast skies, cold temperatures and increased wind. We collected half a dozen medals, all of them on Saturday with the two golds going to Bill O'Donnell (Senior Men 5000m) and Vicky Rolfe (Senior Ladies 800m). Silvers were picked up by Vicky again, Mark Davies, Robin Southcombe and Kirsty Hamilton, all in personal best times, a bronze for Helen Parkinson, while Luke Evans also picked up a couple of pb's over the weekend.

Devonshire Pine Bideford Half Marathon, Bideford, 20/05/2001

We finally got our half marathon going, a couple of months late. The field, understandably was down on previous years, and we had to use an emergency course as parts of the Tarka Trail were still out of bounds. The main prize went to a Cornish Athlete again, Shaun Milford carrying on where Ronnie James left off. Just behind him, though were Steve Davis and Simon Edney. Torrington's Marilyn Blair took the ladies honours. Simon Edney and Paul Sturtridge were our only age group winner

North Devon Relays, Braunton, 23/05/2001

The start of the tenth series of North Devon Relays saw a thrilling conclusion to the men's race, our vet team just getting the better of our Senior team with Minehead in third, the three seperated by a mere 12 seconds. In the ladies, on paper it looked like our senior team would win easily, and duly did so by nearly 5 minutes, while our juniors were three minutes ahead of the only other club to enter, Torrington with our B team third. The only team not to score maximum points were the vet ladies, who came second behind an excellent run from North Devon Road Runners

Plymouth Half Marathon, Plymouth, 27/05/2001

Even though Steve Davis was our fastest runner on the day, honours must go to the ladies, with Vicky following up her win in Exeter with another here, putting herself in a very strong position for the overall three-race series. Not content with first, we also had second - Zelah beating 85 minutes, with the ultra-consistent Jenny Mills another couple of minutes back.
