New Years Day Two Bridges, Bideford, 01/01/2003

The 2003 renewal of the first race of the year saw a welcome return from a seven month injury break from Andrew Ingle, as he broke away from the chasing pack on the Tarka Trail to win by a minute. Lorraine Clements was the fastest lady on the day, and, over the junior course, Luke Rigler got the better of his 10 opponents. Andrew's performance helped his team to victory overall, aided by young Sam Paddon, Elizabeth Higgins and Kaye Allen.

Devon Cross Country Championships, Exeter, 05/01/2003

With a much smaller team than last year, we never expected to match last year's haul of 13 medals, but we did! After very promising runs from Erica and Luke in the U/13 races, Kirsty Hamilton led the goldrush in the U/15 girls, winning by 41 seconds without needing to engage top gear. Then came the U/15 Boys race, and no fewer than 3 medals. John Spry came in first, Reece third and Darren sixth meaning a comprehensive team victory. It looked like we had a strong hand in the ladies race, and so it proved with Helen Purdy never troubled to win and lead home the senior ladies team to gold, with Lucy and Lorraine each picking up an age group medal and, with Sue, the vet ladies team as well. The men's team featured the bare 6 to make up a full team, but with Mike and Kevin always at the forefront, things looked good. Bill took 2nd O/40, with JP and Robin inside the top 12, but our half-time calculations needed Peter J to maintain his place in the mid-thirties to claim victory. No problem, as he held on comfortably to bring the bronze runner back to the Blues clubhouse for the eighth time in the last nine runnings.
Team results - U/15 Boys - 1st, Sen Men - 1st, Sen Ladies - 1st & 4th, Vet Men 1st, Vet Ladies 1st. All other age group teams were incomplete.

Plympton 10K, Plympton, 05/01/2003

While we had lots of runners taking in the Exeter Arena fields, John Matthews participated in the Plympton 10K, coming 147th of 210 in 1:04:25, on what must have been an extremely tough course !

Devon Schools Cross Country, Paignton, 18/01/2003

Using the same flat course as the Westward League races, the contingent of Blues running for North Devon Schools had mixed results. Kirsty was the only one to confirm qualification for the SW and National rounds, while others ran well - Andrew and Callie for instance.

Braunton 10, Braunton, 19/01/2003

The best conditions for the Braunton 10 for a number of years. After Peter Rigler had got off to his customary fast start, Jon and Simon took over and raced together all the way to the last couple of hundred metres, where Jon ran away to claim the victory. Further back, Peter Hockin made a successful return from injury in 4th, Helen matched her husband's performance to take first lady honours, Clive and Sam set excellent new pb's, and both men and ladies picked up first team awards.

Reebok Cross Country Series, Cardiff, 19/01/2003

Kevin Heywood competed in the Welsh round of the high class winter-long series, and had a good run over the 9K, finishing 15th in 32:16


Devon Sportshall Championships, Dawlish, 19/01/2003

Seven young BAAC athletes travelled down to Dawlish for the latest sports hall fixture, which doubled as the County Champs so medals were at stake. The seven returned with no less than eight medals, the highlights of which were a gold for Adam Glover, and a triple silver haul for Holly Earl

The furthest West these Championships have ever been, and a good turnout of Blues competed. Kevin had the best result, both numerically and objectively as he led the senior men's team home to 8th overall. Other complete teams were in the U/15 Boys (11th) and Senior Ladies (12th)
