La Herradura and other places of interest nearby

The attractive village of La Herradura lies at one end of a large horseshoe bay, with a long beach running almost the entire length. A quiet slow moving village for most of the year it has now been ‘discovered’, and from mid July to early September it has become a particularly sought after holiday location.  The village has a large number of varied restaurants and wine bars.

Less than 5 minutes walk from Calabaza there is the very pleasant swimming pool, bar and restaurant area of Las Palomas.  This is an excellent local facility and even in summer rarely gets crowded.  It has a pleasant garden for sunbathing and is fenced in, providing security for families.

There are numerous beaches and coves (more bars and restaurants!) dotted all along this area of coast many of which are well worth exploring. A number of these beaches are good for snorkelling for those wanting to take this more seriously there is also the La Herradura scuba diving school.

Other points of interest nearby include the town of Almuñécar with its historic old streets and Moorish castle, Nerja with its famous Burriana beach, and the fascinating prehistoric caves of Nerja.  The beautiful old hillside village of Frigiliana is also within a very short drive; it is necessary to leave the car at the bottom of the village but the walk up through the winding streets is very worthwhile and there are a couple of good restaurants at the top.

A little over an hour away from La Herradura lies the lovely old city of Granada with the internationally famous Alhambra Palace, with the adjoining and the very beautiful Generalife Gardens.

The lovely scenery of the nearby Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada mountains also make a lovely day trip.  The Sierras providing a centre for skiing and winter sports.
