Countdown to Common Worship

The Church of England's new prayer book (or should that be books?) is due to be introduced in November 2000 although parts of it, such as the new Initiation Rites, have already been authorized for use in parishes. Naturally, many people are concerned about still further liturgical changes when we've only had the Alternative Service Book in use for twenty years. The basic advice that we would like to give people comes from Douglas Adam's wonderful book, "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy." And that is:-

DON'T PANIC!!!

The changes that will be made to our most commonly used services, and especially the Eucharist, together with the various choices that one will be able to make, mean that it should not be difficult or contentious for most parishes to make the transition to the new liturgies. Indeed, many, if not most, congregations may well end up wondering what all the fuss was about.

We have listed below three web sites that between them provide answers to most of the questions that people are likely to have at this stage. They also provide invaluable resources.

  • The Church of England has its own Common Worship web site which includes news about the latest developments in the General Synod together with a variety of resources.
  • PRAXIS, formed in 1990 and sponsored by the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England, the Alcuin Club and the Group for the Renewal of Worship, has a very informative web site that not only contains news of current developments in Common Worship, together with a synopsis of outstanding issues, but also contains a variety of downloadable resources including material that can be used in Parish Magazines etc. Well worth browsing.
  • As part of its Anglican Liturgical Library, the Oremus WWW site contains the texts of the Common Worship material that has been put to General Synod. These are all downloadable.
