HOW TO COMMISSION

The choice of an artefact or sculptural piece for a garden is very personal.  The design consultation reflects this and is absolutely collaborative.  The process begins with the ‘brief’, which normally takes the form of a conversation. It can be conducted in the first instance face to face, or by telephone, letter or E-mail.  The project budget ceiling is usually established from the outset.

Preliminary sketches and notes exploring the possibilities are produced and sent to the client who can then quite freely propose design modifications and developments.  This process continues until the design comes to fruition.

No commitment to go ahead need be made until a final design proposal has been produced and agreed.

“The Sage and the Faerie Bowl”

Picture

Design for an animated water feature - ‘The Sage and the Faeries Bowl’.  Never ending water is poured from the sage’s bowl into his ladle.  From time to time he tips it into the faerie bowl held aloft from beneath the ground by faerie hands. As the water spills into the bowl, tinkling bells ring from beneath the earth

For most small to medium scale projects the design consultation process is offered completely free of charge or obligation unless a site visit is necessary in which case travel and time costs are discussed and agreed up front.

For most small to medium scale commissions a site visit is not necessary and design proposals can usually be successfully based on the brief, backed up by photographs and a sketch plan of the location supplied by the client.

Larger scale or technically complex projects may involve a contribution towards drawing and development costs, but again, there are no nasty surprises, everything is discussed and agreed up front.
