Here's another of Machynlleth's landmark buildings, Royal House. King Charles I is said to have stayed there in 1643 (he got around a lot, you know) and its legends go back a couple of hundred years earlier, to the time of Owain Glyndwr. Whether or not you believe the stories associated with it, the building deserved far better attention than it had been given over recent years, and at last it has been renovated - at considerable expense and superbly. Dendrochronology (see http://www.cpat.org.uk/projects/longer/machyn/machyn.htm) has dated the main roof timbers to 1560/61, and those in the extension to the building from 1576, so it was certainly there at the time of King Charles I.

It's now the home of Mach's Tourist Information Centre, has a range of books and gifts on sale, and if you strike lucky you can get a tour of the other renovated rooms. Behind it is the excellent Ysgubor Newydd, for self-catering rental.
