Why are we here?

Philosophy means 'love of wisdom'. This is all very well, but what is wisdom? One definition I have come across is 'Practical insight for living'. This suggests that philosophy is about life itself and the problems we face getting through life. And it suggests that it is a practical subject, not just a lot of dry, academic mumbo-jumbo that college professors talk about.
*****
There are many branches of philosophy, but one of the basic divisions is into Western Philosophy and Eastern Philosophy. Weatern Philosophy is about ethics, science, mind, metaphysics and religion. eastern Philosophy is more or less totally devoted to religion (though other topics creep in). I am interested in both East and West and especially in Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism in particular.

I have only recently discovered the Singularity. It is a point in time, in our future, when technological progress has accelerated to such an extent that it will be impossible to predict what is going to happen next, the future after that point will be forever obscured. It is as if the rate of progress had gone off the graph, much as gravity goes off the graph in a black hole at the centre of which is a physical singularity.
