Walking in the Peak District

Exploring the green lungs of the North

I am very lucky to live on the edge of one of the finest areas in the country for walking, namely the Peak District. This area consists of the Dark Peak and the White Peak. The Dark Peak, which is the southern end of the Pennine range, consists of high uplands and moorlands, uncultivated and covered largely in peat. The White Peak is an area of dales cut into the local limestone and is mainly cultivated. The contrast between the two regions means there is extremely varied and intersting walking to be had in a compact and accessible space.

There are many guide books to walking in the Peak Park. They cover all standards of walkers, from those who just want to go for a gentle stroll after lunch, to those mounting major expeditions over rough, high ground. The links below will enable you to find a variety of walks to your taste. The Wolds Way is a walk in Yorkshire that I did in 2000 - this is my log of the adventure! See also my journal of The Pennine Way which a group of us did in 1977!
