Or how about...... Dr.Evil !!! |
Waynes World. ( 1992 ).
Well of course this is the one we remember best. The first of two films to feature Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar. The duo, led by Wayne, broadcast on cable-access TV from Wayne's basement on a couch and feature favourites like the vacuum hair cutting machine with Garth proclaimimg that it's "sucking his will to live !". The basic story line is that a sleaze ball TV executive (played by Rob Lowe) sees the show and thinks it has great potential in meeting the kids. He has a client (noah) who has dreampt up the idea of "Noah's Arcade". Lowe sets about offering Wayne & Garth a contract and of course they can't believe their luck. It's all "sponsored" by Noah and gets really cheesey. The boys have of course been sold out.
Meanwhile, Wayne is haunted by his mental ex-girlfriend who buys him a gun rack for his birthday. To which Wayne responds "I don't even own A gun, let alone guns that would necessitate a gun rack." (It is from here that mental ex's are now refered to as "gun racks"). Wayne meets Cassandra (Tia Carrerre), a foxy rock chick. He goes out of his way to learn cantonese and a hillarious subtitles diologue follows. Rob Lowe comes accross Cassandra whilst "hunting down" Wayne and signs her band. Wayne feels both threatened and wary that she also is being exploited. As part of the "buttering-up", the boys get back stage passes to an Alice Cooper gig. Here they meet Alice and the now time honoured phrase "we're not worthy, we're not worthy" is first seen.
To cut a long (& hilarious) story short, Wayne sets out to prove Rob Lowe a greedy user, release his show and get Cassandra a legitimate contract.
The film has many more fantastic scenes such as the longing for the Guitar - "It will be mine, Oh yes. It will be mine.", the lads laying on the bonnet of their car watching planes land and of course the crazy cop who wants to body search everyone.
All this with an excellent sound track to boot. Who can forget the fantastic opening scene where they are all head banging and singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody in the car. The use of this track caused Queen to re-release and go to number one for the second time with the same record !
Of course the film introduced (especially to UK audiences) a virtual new language with all the great phrases and one liners such as "Excellent !", "Party On, Dude", "She's a babe, - yeah, she's babealicious !", "No Way - Way !" "That's cool. - NOT!" etc. all said with loads of "surfin' attitude.
Review to come.
This film is just so excellent ! It's the first time in a film that we get to see Mike playing two characters and he does this superbly in the role of his Scots father, Mr.Mackenzie. The first encounter you have is with him standing in front of a "Scot's Hall of Fame", and playing Rod Stewart whilst dancing in a "Highland" style !
If this wasn't enough, he's next seen slating his youngest son - taking the mick out of the size of his head or "heed" as it's pronounced. To quote "look at the size of that boys' noggin. .....It's a virtual planetoid. ......and, he's going to bed to cry on his huge pillow. - If that's not enough to give any kid a complex.
