A Gronholm victory in the Rally of GB would equal the record of total wins in a WRC season by a rally driver (6).

I'm deleting some of the clutter from the website. Some sections will be permanently withdrawn, others temporarily deleted pending updates. I will probably start afresh with Rally updates in 2003.

Next Rally: Rally Catalunya 22-24 March. Website Prediction: Makinen to improve on last year's 3rd place with victory. Panizzi and Gronholm will continue their form by finishing 2nd and 3rd.

Panizzi wins Tour de Corse. Gronholm and Burns made it a Peugeot 1-2-3. Gronholm moves to 18 points, ahead of Panizzi and Makinen who are both on 10.

This is the first news update in a while. As you can see, I have been having problems with Tiscali. The online editor has disappeared, and the FTP connection has not worked for a long time. Expect to see some more updates soon.

Auriol wins in Catalunya
Didier Auriol won the Rally of Catalunya on Sunday giving Peugeot a one-two finish at the top with Gilles Panizzi in second. Overnight leader Phillipe Bugalski lost a few minutes in time penalties because of a clutch problem. He still gave Citroën an impressive start in the Xsara WRC. Tommi Makinen further stretched his lead at the top of the Driver's Championship to 7 points ahead of Carlos Sainz who finished 6th in his Focus RS WRC. Makinen's team-mate Freddy Loix claimed fifth spot and Sainz's team-mate François Delecour finished 7th. Richard Burns came back from 15th on day one after a gearbox malfunction to take 8th. Simon Jean-Joseph impressed in a private 206 WRC claiming 9th with Bruno Thiry getting another top ten finish in his Skoda finishing tenth.

Makinen triumphs again in Portugal
Full Final StandingsTommi Makinen won his 22nd rally as he triumphed in the Rally of Portugal, beating Spaniard Carlos Sainz by 8.6 secs. Marcus Gronholm picked up his first 4 points of the season in third and Richard Burns scored his first 3 points of the season in his Impreza WRC 44S. François Delecour contiued his impressive season in fifth place and Hyundai scored points with Alistair Mcrae and Kenneth Eriksson in 6th and 7th respectively. Didier Auriol finished eighth, former BRC champion Tapio Laukkanen was 9th in a private Toyota Corolla WRC with Pas Hagstrom 10th in another Corolla. Makinen now has regained sole lead of the Driver's Championship 4 points ahead of Sainz with Harri Rovanpera, who was 3rd in the early stages but had mechanical problems, in 3rd place with 10 points from his first WRC rally win in Sweden.

Channel 4 win rights to WRC
Channel 4 has beaten off the BBC for rights to screen coverage of WRC events from 2002 onwards. Channel 4 has signed a three year deal said to be worth tens of millions of pounds.

Harri Rovanpera wins the Rally of Sweden!
32 year old Finnish driver Harri Rovanpera has won the Rally of Sweden ahead of Swede Thomas Radstrom. It was Rovanpera's first WRC victory. He was home and dry after his main rival Tommi Makinen rolled on the last stage. Carlos Sainz was third after leading in the early stages, Toni Gardemeister impressed again taking fourth in his HF-Grifone 206, Delecour was fifth and Petter Solberg earned SWRT their first driver's and constructor's points. Privateer Carlsson finished seventh in his Toyota, Kenneth Eriksson was eighth in the Accent WRC and Colin Mcrae battled back from 49th to 9th. Bruno Thiry rounded out the top ten. MG Rover are to return to rallying! It will be part of the MG saloon project, codenamed X30. It will compete in the 1600 Junior World Championship and in the BRC with Welshman Gwyndaf Evans, formerly of Seat.

15th January: Thomas Rådström will drive for Mitsubishi in the Swedish Rally, his home event, and other events this year. He will still be contracted to Citröen this year. He will get Manufacturer Points for Mitsubishi.
14th January: For results from the Monte Carlo Rally 2001, go to my home page. Click on the mailing list hyperlink and you will go into a message board. Leave a message in that with your name and e-mail address. Try and leave a message before the 19th if you want daily updates.
20th December: Ford have signed Francois Delecour for next season. He will be the No3 driver in the Focus WRC next season behind Sainz and Colin Mcrae. Alistair Mcrae has decided to stay with Hyundai next season. He will be the No1 driver, with asphalt specialist Piero Liati and Kenneth Eriksson sharing the No2 Accent WRC Evo 2. Citroën have announced that they will only be racing in the 4 asphalt rallies in the WRC next season. They will gain experience from National Championships.
17th December: Peugeot have signed Didier Auriol and Harri Rovanpera as drivers for next season. Auriol will be joint No1 driver with Marcus Gronholm. Rovanpera will drive in the gravel events and Gilles Panizzi will drive in 4 events. Rovanpera was expected to sign for Skoda who have signed 38 year old Bruno Thiry instead.
