Afrormosia:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Afrormosia:

  • "Pericopsis"

Other Names:

  • Assemela (Ivory Coast, France).
  • Kokrodua (Ghana, Ivory Coast).
  • Ayin, Egbi (Nigeria).

Sources:

  • West Africa.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A relatively tall tree, reaching a height of about 150ft and producing a long trunk about 3ft 3in in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A durable wood, with straight to interloced grain.
  • The yellow brown heartwood darkens to the colour of teak, which it resembles, though it is finer textured and not so oily as teak.
  • Afrormosia can react to ferrous metals in moist conditions, causing black stains.

Workability:

  • It saws and planes well and can be brought to a smooth finish, but care is needed with interlocked grain.
  • It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 44lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It can be polished to a fine finish.

Common uses:

  • Veneer.
  • Interior and exterior joinery.
  • Interior and exterior furniture.
  • Building construction.
  • Boatbuilding.
