American Cherry:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

American Cherry:

  • "Prunus serotina"

Other Names:

  • Black Cherry.
  • Cabinet Cherry.

Sources:

  • Canada.
  • U.S.A.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A tree of moderate size, reaching 70ft in height, with a trunk about 1ft 8in in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A hard straight grained wood, with fine texture.
  • The heartwood is reddish brown to deep red, with brown flecks and some gum pockets.
  • The sapwood is narrow and pink in colour.
  • The wood is moderately strong and durable, and can be steam bent.

Workability:

  • It works well with hand and machine tools, and is a good wood for turning.
  • It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 36lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It takes well and can be polished to a fine finish with all types of polish.

Common uses:

  • Furniture.
  • Turney.
  • Pattern making.
  • Joinery.
  • Musical instruments.
  • Tobacco pipes.
  • Veneers.
