Ebony:

• Tendu.
• Tuki.

Sources:

• Sri Lanka.
• India.

Tree Characteristics:

• A relatively small tree, producing a straight trunk up to 15ft in height and 2ft 6in in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

• A hard dense and heavy wood, with a fine even texture and straight, irregular or wavy grain.
• The sapwood is yellowish white, the heartwood a lustrous dark brown to black.
• The heartwood is naturally durable.

Workability:

• A difficult wood to work by hand or machine, it chips easily and quickly dulls the tools .
• It can be machined well on a lathe and brought to a fine finish.
• It does not glue well.

Average dried weight:

• 74lb/cuft.

Finishing:

• It can be polished to an excellent finish.

Common uses:

• Turnery.
• Musical instruments.
• Cutlery handles.
• Inlay.
