Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)
European Plane:
Other Names:
- English, French Plane etc (according to origin).
- London Plane.
Sources:
Tree Characteristics:
- The tree grows to about 100ft in height and produces a trunk about 3ft 3in in diameter.
- It is widely planted in cities due to its tolerance of pollution, and is easily recognized by its flaking mottled bark.
Characteristics of the wood:
- A straight grained wood, with fine to medium texture.
- It has light reddish brown heartwood, with distinct darker rays producing
attractive fleck figure known as "lacewood" when quarter sawn.
- Similar to but darker than American sycamore.
- It is a good wood for steam bending.
- It is perishable and not suitable for exterior use.
Workability:
- It works well with hand and machine tools.
- It glues well.
