Western Hemlock:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Western Hemlock:

  • "Tsuga heterophylla"

Other Names:

  • Pacific hemlock.
  • British Columbian hemlock.

Sources:

  • USA.
  • Canada.
  • UK.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A tall straight, elegant tree with distinctive drooping top, it reaches 200ft in height and 6ft 6in in diameter.
  • It produces large pieces of knot free timber.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A pale brown semi lustrous wood, with relatively distinct growth rings. It is even textured, has straight grain, and is not resinous.
  • It is not a durable wood and must be treated for exterior use.

Workability:

  • Works well with hand and machine tools. It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 31lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • Accepts paint, stain, varnish and polishes well.

Common uses:

  • Joinery.
  • Plywood.
  • Building construction (often used in place of Douglas fir).
