Red Lauan:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Red Lauan:

  • "Shorea negrosensis"

Other Names:

  • None.

Sources:

  • Philippines.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A large tree, reaching 165ft in height and producing a long straight buttreeeed trunk about 6ft 6in in diameter .

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A relatively coarse textured wood, with interlocked grain.
  • The light creamy coloured sapwood is in contrast with the medium to dark red colour of the heartwood.
  • Quarted sawn boards display attractive ribbon grain figure.

Workability:

  • It works easily with hand and machine tools but the surface can tear when planing.
  • It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 39lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It stains weel and can be varnished and polished to a good finish.

Common uses:

  • Interior joinery.
  • Boatbuilding.
  • Furniture.
  • Veneer.
  • Instrument boxes.
