Lime:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Lime:

  • "Tilia vulgaris"

Other names:

  • Linden (Germany)

Sources:

  • Europe.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A tree of moderate size, it reaches about 100ft in height, but can be more.
  • The tree produces a clear trunk some 4ft in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A soft straight grained wood, with fine uniform texture.
  • The colour is white to pale yellow, with no distinction between sapwood and heartwood, but darkens to light brown on exposure.
  • It is a strong wood, with good resistance to splitting, and is widely used for fine carving.

Workability:

  • It works very easily with handtools and machines, but requires sharp tools for a clean cut.
  • It is good for turning and excellent for carving.
  • It glues well.

Average dried weight:

  • 35lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It stains well and polishes to a fine finish.

Common uses:

  • Carving.
  • Broom handles.
  • Hat blocks.
  • Piano sounding boards and keys.
  • Harps.
  • Turnery.
  • Toys.
