Tree Characteristics:

• A nut bearing tree of relatively largesize, reaching 100ft in height and 3ft 3in in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

• A coarse textured wood, generally straight grained but can be irregular or wavy.
• The sapwood is white, and the heartwood reddish brown in colour.
• A ring porous wood, it is similar in appearance to Ash.
• It is a dense tough shock resisting wood a little heavier than Ash but can vary according to the rate of growth.
• It is not naturally durable.

Workability:

• Dense fast growing wood can be difficult to work and will quickly dull the tools.
• It glues satisfactorily.

Average dried weight:

• 46lb/cuft.

Finishing:

• Although ring porous it can be brought to a smooth finish and stains and polishes well.

Common uses:

• Striking tool handles.
• Sports equipment.
• Chairs and bentwood furniture.
