Rosewood:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Rosewood:

  • "Dalbergia latifolia"

Other Names:

  • East Rosewood.
  • Bombay Rosewood (UK).
  • Bombay Blackwood (India)

Sources:

  • India.

Tree Characteristics:

  • Size varies according to growing conditions, but the tree can reach 80ft in height.
  • It produces a straight clear cylindrical trunk up to 5ft in diameter.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A hard heavy, moderately coarse wood, with uniform texture.
  • It has a subtle ribbon grain figure due to interlocked narrow bands.
  • The colour is golden brown to purple brown, with streaks of dark purple or black.
  • It is a naturally durable wood.

Workability:

  • It is moderately difficult to work with hand tools and has a dulling effect on cutting edges of machine tools.
  • It glues satisfactorily.

Average dried weight:

  • 54lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • The grain requires filling to achieve a high polish.
  • It responds well to a wax polish.

Common uses:

  • Furniture.
  • Shop fittings.
  • Musical instruments.
  • Boatbuilding.
  • Turnery.
  • Veneer.
