Sequoia:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Sequoia:

  • "Sequoia sempervirens"

Other Names:

  • Californian redwood.

Sources:

  • USA.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A magnificent straight growing tree, with short drooping branches. It grows to about 330ft in height, and its buttressed trunk can be more than 15ft in diameter.
  • It has a distinctive red coloured fissured bark, which can be more than 1ft thick.

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A straight grained reedish brown timber, with marked contrast between the earlywood and latewood.
  • It is relatively soft, and the texture can vary from fine and even to relatively coarse.
  • It is durable and suitable for exterior use.

Workability:

  • Works well with hand and machine tools, but requires sharp cutting edges to prevent break out along the cut.
  • It glues and sands well.

Average dried weight:

  • 26lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • Accepts paint well and can be brought to a good finish with polish.

Common uses:

  • Shingles.
  • Exterior cladding.
  • Interior joinery.
  • Coffins.
  • Plywood.
  • Posts.
