Soft Maple:

Below you will find information about some of the timber I use in the making of Chairs, and other furniture. (some of it may not be avalable in your area.)

Soft Maple:

  • "Acer rubrum"

Other Names:

  • Red Maple.

Sources:

  • USA.
  • Canada.

Tree Characteristics:

  • A tree of medium size, reaching 75ft in height and prouducing a trunk up to 2ft 6" in diameter

Characteristics of the wood:

  • A straight grained fine textured wood, it is not as hard and strong as hard maple.
  • The wood is lustrous and light creamy brown in colour, It has good steam bending properties.
  • Not naturally durable for outdoor use.

Workability:

  • The wood works readily with hand and machine tools.
  • It glues satisfactorily

Average dried weight:

  • 39lb/cuft.

Finishing:

  • It stains well and polishes to a fine finish.

Common uses:

  • Interior joinery.
  • Furniture.
  • Turnery.
  • Musical Instruments.
  • Flooring
  • Plywood.
  • Veneer.
