European Sycamore:

European Sycamore:

• "Acer pseudoplatanus"

Other Names:

• Sycamore, great maple(UK);
• Plane(Scotland).

Tree Characteristics:

• The tree can reach a height of 100ft and a diameter of 5ft.

Characteristics of the wood:

• A fine even textured wood usually straight grained, but can be wavy, producing fiddleback figure when quarter sawn.
• It is white to yellowish white in colour, with a lustrous surface.
• A good wood for steam bending.
• It is not suitable for exterior use.

Workability:

• It works well with hand and machine tools, but wavy grain wood needs care.
• It glues well.

Average dried weight:

• 39lb/cuft.

Finishing:

• It stains well and polishes to a fine finish.

Common uses:

• Furniture,
• Kitchen utensils,
• Flooring,
• Veneer.
• Fiddleback sycamore is used for violin backs, from which it gets it name.
