Yellow Birch:

• Canadian yellow birch

Tree Characteristics:

• The largest of the North American birches,the tree usually reaches about 65ft in height.
• Its straight, slightly tapering trunk is generally about 2ft 6in in diameter, but can be more depending on growing conditions.

Characteristics of the wood:

• A straight grained wood, with fine even texture.
• It has light yellow sapwood, and reddish brown heartwood with distinct dark coloured growth rings.
• It has good steam bending properties.
• It is not durable and the heartwood is resistant to preservative treatment.
• The sapwood is permeable.

Workability:

• It works reasonable well with hand tools, and machines and glues well.

Average dried weight:

• 44lb/cuft.

Finishing:

• It stains well and can be polished to a fine light coloured finish.

Common uses:

• Furniture.
• Joinery.
• Flooring.
• Turnery.
• High grade plywood.
