Dojo Kun

There are three Shindo training hall oaths or dojo kun (pronounced doh-joe-koon). The first is that which came to me from my first teacher Jon Alexander when I started training in 1974. It is of great significance to me and to the system I have chosen to perpetuate. The second is profound in its simplicity and comes from Soken Hohan (1889-1982) the fourth headmaster of the classical system within Shindo. The third kun is my own. Read the oaths and remember them throughout your Shindo training, then pass them on to your students.

Zen Shin Ryu Dojo kun

  1. I live in this world, which in some way, no matter how insignificant, I have helped to create. I cannot help what is past, however I can, through my practise of Karate, modify my future actions to bring about the improvement of all things.
  2. I may not understand all that I have been taught, yet I have been instructed, and must strive to find the meaning of that instruction, no matter how long it may take, knowing that instruction can sometimes be absolute silence, a word, a sentence, or a loud shout.
  3. I will not criticise others until I myself am perfect and above criticism.
  4. In instructing others, I must try to remember my own lack of ability and understanding, and teach with patience and determination to improve the ability of others and myself.
