How to Study the Way

  1. Base your training in history and tradition. Shindo has been developed over many centuries. You should not discard valuable and important concepts and teachings, rather retain and preserve the old ways, they were developed by masters who knew about our art first hand.

  2. The essential training in the art are the classical or orthodox forms (seito gata). Without seito gata, there could be no Shindo. From the earliest times knowledge of our art has been handed down by way of these forms. Many of the forms trained in today have a long history. Every student should know something of the forms that he or she trains in. It is just not enough to know the movements without knowing anything about the forms' origins and history. The learning of forms takes many years. Constant and repetitive training is required. One cannot learn our art just attending lessons occasionally. You must train every day. Only by training every day will you learn to focus strength, and become fluid. Even after many years, the practise is never finished, there is always something new to be learned about the forms. This should not be cause for despondency, rather think of it as a never-ending voyage of discovery, in an infinite sea of knowledge. You can never exhaust the source of wisdom.

  3. You should study and practise the application of movement within the forms There is no use in executing empty movements without understanding them. Thorough training in application will bring an understanding of distance and timing, two of the most important aspects of practise within Shindo.

Practise in application of the forms instils an understanding of the attainment of complete anticipation or sixth sense foresight.

  4. Quiet contemplation (meditation) should also form a part of the training. This is important for mind training and relieving stress. This can best be achieved through the kinetic meditation offered within the forms which I believe to be infinitely more meaningful that meditation in repose.

Remember that progress depends upon the following: -

    • Regular attendance
    • Smartness and cleanliness
    • Leadership
    • Using practise time fully
    • Helping other students
    • Proper etiquette and politeness
    • Showing superior attitude and conduct
    • Displaying an interest in the art by asking questions
    • Having respect for the opinions and beliefs of other people.
