Project 5
Introduction
The Project 5 programme provides training in Peaceful Response Strategies.
It is primarily aimed at people who work as carers, in order to equip them with the skills needed to deal appropriately with aggression in their daily work.
Project 5 training is provided by the Institute for Research into the Management of Aggression (IRMA), which was set up in 1976 expressly for this purpose.
Why do We need to Manage Aggression
- Aggression and violence includes verbal abuse, racial or sexual harassment and
physical attacks.
Everyone who works with the general public is at risk from violence.
- Many carer givers who work in potentially or actually violent surroundings, do
not fully understand the principles of appropriate response. As a result staff
have often felt unable to respond at all thus sustaining emotional trauma or
physical injury. On other occasions staff have over-reacted and dealt with a
situation inappropriately.
Untrained staff increase the risk of legal proceedings dramatically.
- Legal proceedings following incidences of violence can be costly, time consuming
and stressful for all those involved.
How Can Project 5 Help
- Project 5 provides specialist training for the caring professions.
- The Project 5 guiding, releasing and holding techniques are always affected in a
peaceful, caring and non-harming way. The well being and dignity of all the
individuals involved is maintained.
Dignified, passive and empathic physical intervention techniques are used.
- The Project 5 Peaceful Response training programme, first presented in 1976,
was specially created to meet the needs of those working in caring professions,
it is unique in its approach.
- Training comprises a series of inter-active role play exercises supported by
short explanatory lectures and group discussions. The object is to examine ways
in which staff may cope with violence using verbal and non-verbal communication
skills, escape strategies and `hands on` guiding, releasing or holding techniques.
Project 5 training increases personal confidence and group morale.
- Each Project 5 Peaceful Response course delivered in your geographic location is
facilitated by Project 5's principal Roger Sheldon who has over twenty five
years experience in this field. He will be happy to discuss your specific needs
and the background to any training that you wish to provide for your staff in
the strictest confidence.
- Each course is unique and developed to meet the service provider's exact needs.
It will also compliment and support any policy statement and guidelines that may
be in effect. Project 5's principal, Roger Sheldon achieves this, if necessary,
by visiting each service provider personally to discuss individual needs and aims.
Courses are specially created to meet your precise needs.
- In a number of special instances, just a day's training input may be all that is
required. In other situations it is felt that two days training would be more
appropriate.
- One and two day courses delivered in whole or half day modules.
Project 5 has an in depth understanding of service providers problems and needs.
- Positive assistance provided in drawing up working guidelines.
Full back up pre-course information, explanatory course notes and official
Project 5 attendance certificates are provided.
- Roger Sheldon has been recognised by the leading authorities in the UK and has
taught over 20,000 professionals since 1976. He has developed a unique
understanding of the management of aggression and violence in social service
and health care settings.
