Uchi Waza - Striking Exercise

Along with the Reversed Hand Exercise, this is the most recent method that I have developed (1999). I did so to compliment the other basic technique methods of the system. It embodies the three most used and useful striking options of all, the back-fist strike (uraken), heel of hand thrust (teisho) and sword hand strike (shuto). The exercise represents a development of the old Shuto nagashi uke waza of former Zen Shin Ryu days. In this exercise one hand becomes a protective cover which is positioned in front of the sternum while the other (active) hand effects the strike.

Principles embodied in Uchi Waza

  1. Move laterally and get out of the line of attack
  2. Use hand controls throughout
  3. Use recoil of strikes
  4. Pushing / control principle
  5. Positional awareness
  6. Counter attack to vital points

Outline of Exercise

  1. Opening
  2. Techniques to left otta
  3. Techniques to right otta
  4. Techniques to front otta
  5. Techniques to rear otta
  6. Techniques to front otta
  7. Closing
