Historical Townships of The Ross

ROMHC are currently working toward interpreting all aspects of the Ross of Mull, genealogical, archaeological, built and social heritage, geology, flora and fauna.

By using historical documents, census records, passenger lists, family histories and the physical remains of the deserted townships on the land, we can build a picture of what life was like in the Ross before and at the time of the Clearances (circa 1847).

This links the people of the past to the place, and for those worldwide who have ancestral links to the Ross, brings the live's of their ancestors back to life!

On this website we eventually hope to tell you a little bit about each district on the Ross, but for the time being we have included some pictures of the townships around the area. To whet your appetite for now an example of how we propose to interpret the time of the clearances can be found by clicking on the picture of Shiaba below.

Suidhe

Suidhe is a deserted farming township situated on the outskirts of Bunessan and one of the possible sites we are considering as a location for our permanent centre.

Tireregan

Tireregan lies to the southerly side of the Ross and much work has been done by Highland Renewal to promote this area.

Kilvickeon

Kilvickeon Chapel is a very important relic upon the Ross as it is believed to be one of the earliest Christian Places of worship upon the Ross.

Shiaba

Shiaba is an excellent example of crofting life around the time of the Clearances. To learn more about Shiaba please click on the picture. (Please bear with us if the page concerning Shiaba is a bit slower to download but the images are essential in telling the story!)

If you are interested in learning more about the townships of the Ross please visit the centre.

We are open from April until October, but are available for visits by appointment outwith the summer season.
