Who Are We

And How Did We Get Started?

The Ross of Mull is a peninsula of land on the Southerly tip of the Island of Mull which is steeped in history and culture pertaining to the emigration of the Scots who travelled out to the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa following the days of the Highland Clearances.

For many years individuals around the world have been actively gathering and researching genealogical and historical information relating to the Ross ( Meg Douglas, Jo Currie, Alistair McKinnon, Dr J McInnes, Mary McLean Hoff, Mhiari McArtur etc). One of our founding members James McKeand established contact with these many individuals who shared his deep interest for the Ross. As more locals became aware of the discreet research which was being carried out James began to receive many donations of photographs and documents relating to the people of the Ross, this action has over the years evolved into a worldwide pursuit and James and Attie Mckechnie continued to receive an increasing amount of enquiries from international sources as well as from the local community.

It soon became evident that a community facility would be required to house the overwhelming amount of documents and artefacts which were being submitted and to provide a focal point for enquiries related to the Ross.

In 1997 a well supported steering group was established from members of the local community. In May of 1998 a portacabin was made available on a temporary basis, with the intention of establishing a permanent centre, and is situated in the village of Bunessan.
