Auchmithie is a village perched on a cliff a few miles north of Arbroath. Some would say that it's the original home of the famed "Arbroath Smokie", and indeed for a long time it had a much bigger fishing fleet than its southern neighbour. But its harbour, at the foot of the cliffs was possibly less attractive than that available in Arbroath and during the 19th century, much of its fleet moved away. The village is a quiet spot today with the harbour only home to a few small vessels Of passing note is that fact that it figures in Scott's "The Antiquary", where it is called "Musselcrag". There is a rather nice seafood restaurant in the village which is worth a visit. |
