What can one say about Carnoustie? Its where the bucket and spade brigade meet the Pringle-sweater-clad knights of the fairway! Golf and sandcastles account for the town's popularity, indeed for its very existence.

There are few buildings of historic interest but three golf courses and many, many hotels.

The Open was last played here in 1999, a somewhat controversial championship because of the state of the course, but will no doubt return at some point.

A few miles away, Barry Mill is worth a visit, it was the last working water-powered meal mill in Angus, producing oatmeal until the late 1970s and animal feed until 1982 and is now under the care of the National Trust for Scotland.

Milling demonstrations normally take place on Sunday afternoons and for pre-booked parties. Displays highlight the important place the mill held in the community.
