The History of the Beauchamp Family

From Hale and Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.

The names in red are the line of my ancestors. This is my mothers maiden name and is referred to in some old records as either  Becham/Beacham/Beecham/Beachamp/Beauchamp depending on who wrote it.


 1. George Beacham  christened on 11th January 1756 in Hale, Hampshire. 

He married on the 7th December 1780 in Hale to Elizabeth Harris born about 1759 in Hale, Hampshire. 

George and Elizabeth had nine children  1-9

1. George Beacham born 1781 and christened on 24th September 1781 in Hale, Hampshire. Married on the 4th March 1811 to Sarah Glew

George and Sarah had four children 1-4

1.William Beacham born 27th January 1812 in Portsea, Hampshire.

2. John Beacham born 18th February 1814 in Portsea, Hampshire.

3. Eliza Beacham born 5th July 1818 in Portsea, Hampshire.

4. Sarah Beacham born 4th August 1822 in Portsea, Hampshire.

Married on the 25th November 1807 in Bramshaw, Wiltshire to Henry Mills born 1778 and christened on 25th December 1778 in Bramshaw, Wiltshire

Elizabeth and Henry had seven children   1-7

1. Henry Mills  born 1808 christened on 31st December 1809 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. He married on the 5th September 1844 to Harriet Thompson  christened on 8th April 1821 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. Harriet died before 1861

2. Charles Mills  born 1810 and christened on 5th May1811 (aged 1) in Bramshaw, Hampshire. He married on the 15th February 1840 in Downton to Fanny Eldridge  born about < 1812>  in Downton, Wiltshire. They had a daughter Eliza Mills born <1841>  in Downton, Wiltshire

3. James Mills   christened on 30th August 1812 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. He was an agricultural labourer. He married in Downton, Wiltshire on the 12th February 1837 to Mary Henbest born 23rd August 1818 and christened on 20th September 1818 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. In 1881 she was a washer woman and they lived in Bramshaw. She died 15th October 1883 in Bramshaw. (aged 65) .James and Mary had eight children

4. John Mills  born in Plaitford, Wiltshire and christened on 2nd January 1814 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. A Farm Labourer. He married on the 27th August 1831 in Bramshaw to Ursula Hatch  born 1814 and christened on 13th March 1814 in Bramshaw, Hampshire. John and Ursula had eight children

5. Elizabeth Mills  born 1815 and christened on 17th September 1815 in Bramshaw, Hampshire

6.Mary Ann Mills  born 1816 and christened on 8th December 1816 in Bramshaw, Hampshire

7. Maria Mills  born 1820 and christened on 25th June 1820 in Bramshaw, Hampshire


3. Sarah Beacham  born 1785 and christened on 13th March 1785  in Hale, Hampshire.  Married on the 1st May 1803 in Chilworth, Hants to John Duthoit born 1778

Sarah and John had a daughter

 Sarah Duthoit  born 1809 and christened on 30th July 1809 in Southampton, Hampshire. Married on the 8th July 1829 in Shoreditch, London to Jebus Balch born 1801 and christened 26th April 1801 in Shoreditch, London. His father was Thomas Balch,  mother was  Mary and he had a brother Thomas James Balch christened 11th November 1798 in Shoreditch, London. Jebus and Sarah had four children 1-4

2. Henry Duthoit Balch born 3rd September 1832 and christened on 16th November 1834 in Shoreditch, London

3. Sarah Ann Balch born 5th August 1834 and christened on 16th November 1834 in Shoreditch, London

4. Jabez  Balch born 27th August 1836 and christened on 28th November 1836 in Shoreditch, London


4. John Beacham  born 1786 and christened on 5th Nov 1786 in Hale, Hampshire


5. Martha Beacham  born 1789 and christened on 10th August 1789 in Hale, Hampshire. Married 15th May 1814 in Hursley, Hampshire to Henry Cawte.

Henry and Martha  had three children 1-3

1. Jane Cawte  born 1820 and christened on 18th June 1820 in North Baddersley, Hampshire

2. George Cawte  born 1825 and christened on 20th Nov 1825 in North Baddersley, Hampshire. Married 2nd June 1846 in Winchester, Hampshire to Eliza Chivers born 1820 christened 2nd April 1820 in Bishops Sutton, Hampshire. George had died before 1881 and left Eliza as head of family and working as a Laundress.

1.  Mary Ann Cawte born 1847 and christened on 17th March 1847 in Winchester, Hampshire

2.  Eliza Cawte born 1850 and christened on 12th July 1850 in Winchester, Hampshire

3. Elizabeth Cawte born 1853 and christened on 13th February 1853 in Winchester, Hampshire

4.  Charlotte Cawte born 1858 and christened on 11th March 1858 in Southampton, Hampshire. She was a Domestic Servant

5. Alice Cawte born 1862 in Winchester, Hampshire. She was an assistant school mistress

3. Thomas Cawte  born 1829 and christened on 12th Jul 1829 in North Baddersley, Hampshire. He married Jane born 1832 in Twyford, Hampshire. He was a Gardener and in 1881 he lived in Winchester


6. William Beacham  born 1791 and christened on 14th August 1791 in Hale, Hampshire

Married 27th Feb 1816 in Hale, Hampshire to Susanna Wort  born 1792 and christened on18th November 1792 in Hale.

She died 8th February 1844.(aged 52)

4. George Beacham  born 1825 and christened on 21st Aug 1825 in Hale, Hampshire. He married Emma born 1824 in Wood Green, Hampshire. they had two sons Thomas born 1849 in Woodgreen ( a gardener) and John born 1860 in North Charford, Hampshire (a blacksmith)

5. Emily Beacham  born 1827 and christened on 23rd Dec 1827 in Hale, Hampshire.

 Married 28th July 1849 to Edgar Sainsbury. Born 1823 and christened  17th December 1823 in Woodgreen, Breamore, Hampshire. Edgar died 2nd February 1889 in Kilmington, Devon (aged 66)Emily Died 27th Jun 1891 in the old Town, Chard, Somerset (aged 63) Edgar and Emily  had ten children

7. Michael Beauchamp  born 1833 and christened on 29th Sep 1833 in Hale, Hampshire. Married Elizabeth born 1834 in Breamore, Hampshire. They had a daughter Alice Maria born about 1856 and a son George born about 1859 in Axminster, Devon.


7. Maria Louisa Beacham  born 1796 and christened on 20th March 1796 in Hale, Hampshire


8. Joseph Beacham  born 1798 and christened on 15th April 1798 in Hale, Hampshire. He was a woodman.

Married 24th August 1822 in Downton, Wiltshire to Sarah Tanner born <1798> in Downton.

Sarah and Joseph had two children

Eliza Beauchamp christened 22nd December 1822 in Hale

 Harriet Beachamp christened on 19th February 1826 in Downton, Wiltshire


9. Isaac Beacham  born 1799 and christened on 13th July 1799 in Hale, Hampshire. A Pauper in 1851 census. He married 27th May 1818 in Downton, Wiltshire to Lucy Higgs .

Isaac and Lucy had these six children

 Drusilla Beachamp born<1821> in Whiteparish, Wiltshire. A Lacemaker

 Mary Ann Beachamp christened on 19th June 1826 in Downton, Wiltshire

 Harriet Beachamp christened on 15th June 1828 in Downton, Wiltshire. A Lacemaker

 Anne Beachamp christened on 11th June 1830 in Downton, Wiltshire

 Elizabeth Beachamp christened on 7th September 1834 in Downton, Wiltshire. A Lacemaker

He married on 22nd May 1807  to Elizabeth Mouland  born about 1786 in Downton, Wiltshire

John and Elizabeth had eleven children 1-11

1. Charles Beacham born 1807 and christened on 13th December 1807 in Hale, Hampshire. He married on 22nd April 1833 in Downton, Wiltshire to Elizabeth Jennings born about 1810.Charles and Elizabeth had six known children 1 - 6

2.George Beauchamp born about 1837 in Redlynch, Wiltshire .He married Ketura born about 1812 in Woodgreen, Hampshire. In 1881 he was a gamekeeper. They had five known children

Charles Beauchamp born about 1866 in Martin, Wiltshire He was also a gamekeeper

Rosina Beauchamp born about 1867 in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, a Domestic servant

Emily J Beauchamp born about 1872 in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, a Scholar

Kate Beauchamp born about 1874 in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, a Scholar

6.Albert Beauchamp born 1851 in Redlynch, Wiltshire. He married Julia Ellen Rawlins born about 1855 in Northcommon, Wiltshire. In 1881 he was a Ag Lab. They had 12  children.

3.  Ann Beacham  born 1811 and christened on 11th December 1811 in Hale, Hampshire. She married on 16th July 1831 in Hale, Hampshire to George Moudy born about 1808 and christened 13th January 1808 in Hale Hampshire.  He died September 1852 (aged 44) His parents were George Moody and Sarah Blanchard. They married 21st February 1790 in Hale, Hampshire.

George and Ann had eight children 

1. James Moudy christened 25th December 1831 in Hale. Hampshire

2.  Mary Moudy christened 10th June 1832 in Hale. Hampshire.

3. Jane Moudy christened 24th March 1833 in Hale. Hampshire

4. George Moudy christened 8th February 1835 in Hale. Hampshire. Died before 1844

5.  Mary Moudy christened 25th June 1836 in Hale. Hampshire

6.  Fanny Moudy christened 18th June 1840 in Hale. Hampshire

7.  George Moudy christened 26th February 1844 in Hale. Hampshire. In 1881 he was a Gardener in Lutterworth, Leicester. Married Priscilla born 1845 in Arnesby, Leicester, England. They had four known children

4. Isaac Beacham 13th March 1814 in Hale, Hampshire. Died before 1818


5. William Beacham  born 1815 and christened on 14th April 1815 in Hale, Hampshire. He married on 22nd April 1838 in St Mary, Wilton by Salisbury, Wiltshire to Sarah Tidman christened 6th February 1814 in St Mary, Wilton by Salisbury, Wiltshire. Her parents were James and Mary Tidman.  In 1881 Sarah was a widow and a Nurse lodging with the Green Family in West Ham, Essex. They had three known children

Matthew Beauchamp born 1848. He marries Julia b.1849 in Milton Thorbury, Leicester. They had five children

9. James Beacham  born 1825 in Wood Green and christened on 23rd Oct 1825 in Hale, Hampshire. Married Amelia born 1831 in  West Dean, Wiltshire. He was a shepherd and they had a son Frank born 1859 in West Dean ( a Labourer)


10. Elizabeth Beacham  born 1827 and christened on 28th Oct 1827 in Hale, Hampshire


11. Edward Beacham born 1833 and christened 16th June 1833 in Hale, Hampshire


3.Henry Beauchamp  born 3rd August 1823  in Hale, Hampshire

He married on 25th December 1841  to Sarah Cooper born 5th August 1821 in Downton, Wiltshire. She was 20 years old and in 1851 they lived in the small village of Charlton just north of Downton. He was a carpenter
Henry and Sarah had two children.

1. Harry Beauchamp born 1848 in Redlynch, Wiltshire. A general labourer, he married in the year 1869 in Marylebone, London,  to Eliza Butler born 1841 in Hull, Yorkshire. In 1881 he lived at 6 Isaacs Terrace, Kingston upon Hull, York

1. William Hansell Beauchamp born 1871 in Marylebone, London. (1901 a brass finisher)

2. Mary Alice Beauchamp born 1875 in Hull, Yorkshire.

3. Kate Beauchamp born 1877 in Hull, Yorkshire. (1901 a milliner)

4. Jessie M. Beauchamp born 1879 in Hull, Yorkshire.

5. Esther A. Beauchamp born 1880 in Hull, Yorkshire. (1901 a domestic housemaid /London)

9. Edward  Beauchamp born 1850 in Redlynch, Wiltshire. (in 2nd quarter of 1850)

 He was a carpenter working in Portsmouth where he met his wife, He married on 18th September 1870 in St Mary's Church, Portsea to Ellen Jane Russell born 1850 (Ellen was born in Whitwell, Isle of Wight.) They then moved to Salisbury, Wiltshire. In 1881 they were living at 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Edward and Ellen had four children   1 - 4

1. William Henry Beauchamp born 16th January 1875 in 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire.


2. Rose Ellen Beauchamp born in the first quarter of 1878 in 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire. She married on 30th March 1895 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury to John Britton born 1861 in Salisbury. In 1881 he was a groom for Alexander Ionides ( The Late Consul General of Greece)


3. Edward Harry Beauchamp born 1880 in 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann St, Salisbury, Wiltshire. He was buried on 19th February 1960 (aged 79) in St Mary Extra Cemetery, Sholing, Southampton. Grave site K-072-081


4. Frank Beauchamp born 1886 in 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann St, Salisbury, Wiltshire.


10.William Henry Beauchamp

born 16th January 1875 in 5 Prospect Place, 66 St Ann Street, Salisbury, Wilts.

He married Kate Hillier on 24th December 1892 in the registry office at Alderbury. They lived for a while at 13 Greencroft St, Salisbury where their first two children were born. They moved to Southampton where they lived in Manor Road, Mortimer Road, Back Lane and finally Brickfield Cottage in the brick fields at Botany Bay, Sholing, Southampton. William was a bricklayer journeyman and then he worked at the brickfield in Botany Bay, Sholing, Southampton. 

He was buried on 22nd January 1957 (aged 82) and Kate was buried on 9th February 1949 (aged 77) Both in St Mary Extra Cemetery, Sholing, Southampton. Grave site K-072-081

1.  William Frederick Beauchamp born April1894 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Photo He was baptised on the 29th April 1894 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury. He joined the cavalry and was sent to France for the 1914-18 war. His horse kicked him in the head and he received serious head wounds and was returned home. He died in agony on the 18th November 1920 (aged 26) in No 2 Brickfield Cottages, Botany Bay, Sholing, Southampton, Hampshire from his wounds.

2.  Kate Beauchamp born December1895 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Baptised 26th January 1896 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury. Known as "Dolly" she died on 13th October 1902 (aged 6) in Sholing, Southampton, Hampshire

3.  Edward George Beauchamp Photo born Dec 1899 in Woolston, Southampton.
He became a ships steward. He married on 5th July 1924 to Lillian Pretoria Thomasina Eade Photo born1900 in Northam, Southampton. Her father Alfred Eade was a sawyer for Camber Nicholson's, he lived at 16 William Street, Northam, Southampton, Hampshire

4.  Charles Alfred Beauchamp born16th March 1901 in Woolston, Southampton.
He married Alice Maud Norris on 3rd June 1930 and they had eight children. He died 21st August 1969 and Alice on 6th May 1972 in the Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton, Hampshire

5.  Lily Ellen Beauchamp born 17th October 1903 in Woolston, Southampton, Hampshire
She married Alfred Henry Bushell (born 1899) on 22nd December 1928. They had two children.

6. Mabel Beauchamp born 21st June 1904 in Woolston, Southampton, Hampshire. Known as "May"
She married on 17th December 1932 to Geoffrey Charles Hayward (b.1905)  He was a ships Steward. They had one child.

7. Ena  Gertrude Beauchamp born 1st February 1906 in Woolston, Southampton. 
She married Albert Edward Johnston on 26th December 1930. She died February 1990. They had 2 children

8. Elsie Dorcas Beauchamp born 29th September1907 in Woolston, Southampton, Hampshire 
She married on 5th November 1932 to Harry Gaunt born 1908 a ships steward. Elsie died 30th March 1997 and Harry 26th November 1990 They had two children

9. Harry Beauchamp born 7th December 1908 in Woolston, Southampton, Hampshire 
He married on 25th July 1936 to Dorothy Margaret Hayward   born 1909 and christened on  20th August 1909. When he married he was a bricklayer. He died December 1994 and Dorothy died January 1978. They had 8 children.

10. Albert Beauchamp   born 1910 and christened on 11th April 1910 in Sholing, Southampton, Hampshire
He married Doris about 1938 and they had three children. He died in 1998

11. Richard Beauchamp   born 1913 and christened on 28th April1913 in Sholing, Southampton, Hampshire 
He married about 1940 to Edith Joyce Cove.  born 1918 and christened on 12th April 1918.He died in 1992 and Edith died in 1991. They had three children.

12. Ernest Beauchamp born 1914 in Woolston, Southampton, Hampshire 
He died in 1915 (aged 9 months.)
