The Family of my Grandmother (maternal)
1. John Hillier born between 1782 and 1791.
John was a servant and cook to Dr William Finch who, amongst others owned the Laverstock Lunatic Asylum. He was employed by him from about 1815 until he died on 18th January 1848. This was eleven days after Dr William Finch died. His death certificate states his age at death as 65 and earlier in the 1841 census as 50 where he was classified as 'F' for foreign.
We have no birth record for John so can only assume he was born between 1782 and 1791.
His death was reported in The Salisbury Gazette and stated he was a man of colour
Dictionary states : A man of colour. There are three classes: (1) the pure whites; (2) the people of colour; (3) Negroes and mulattoes.
John married on 22nd March 1818 in St Edmunds Parish Church to Elizabeth Young Scammell born 1798 and christened on 16th March 1798 in South Newton, Wiltshire. In 1817 Elizabeth had been hired as a dairy maid at the Laverstock Lunatic Asylum. Her mother was Mary Scammell
They lived at the asylum until they married and then for four years they lived in a house in the parish of St Edmunds, Salisbury. Then they moved to a cottage in Laverstock owned by Dr Finch and lived there until John died.
In the 1841 census it shows John at the cottage with Elizabeth and eight of the children, Louisa aged 14 was a servant at the house of John Hearn , bookseller of Minster Street.
Elizabeth then moved to Gigant Street, Salisbury. In the 1851 census Elizabeth lived in Sutton Buildings ,Milford Place, Milford Street, Salisbury and she worked as a laundress in the Salisbury Steam Laundry. She died 30th January 1869 (aged 70)

1. Mary Anne Hillier born 5th June 1818 and christened on 8th July 1818 in St Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Married in St Martins Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire on 17th February 1850 to William Andrews born 1824 in Rockbourne, Hampshire. Mary died 1870 in Devizes, Wiltshire. William remarried late 1870 to Maria Greenleaf. He died 1888 aged 63
William and Mary had a son Albert J Andrews born 1857
2. Elizabeth Hillier born 2nd July 1820 and christened on 30th July 1820 in St Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Married 14th August 1843 in Laverstock Parish Church to Joseph Wortley born 1813. Joseph died 1873 in Mile End town.
Elizabeth and Joseph had eight children
1.Adolphus Frederick Wortley born 1847 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. He married in 1879 to Maria Raven born 1855 in Stepney, London. In 1901 he was living in West Ham with Maria, her niece Agnes born 1889 and two of his children. Violet born 1884 in Bermondsey, London and Edward born 1895 in Plaistow, Essex.
2.Augustus Francis Wortley born 1848 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. He married in 1878 to Annie Raven born 1860 in Great Wakering, Essex. In 1901 he was living in West Ham with Annie and five of his children. Evelyn born 1892, Catherine born 1893, Edward born 1896, Maysie born 1898 and Ruby born 1900. All were born in Plaistow, Essex. Augustus and Annie had seven children

3. Amelia Hillier born 16th September 1822 in Laverstock, Wiltshire and christened on 20th October 1822. She had a daughter Ellen Louisa Scammell Hillier born 27th November 1842 and baptised 1st January 1843 and died (aged two) in 1844.
Amelia married on 25th May 1845 in Laverstock to George Hixon born 1829 in Andover. In 1851 he was a stableman. he died 1902,His father was William Hixon.
4. Jane Hillier born 3rd July 1825 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. christened on 21st August 1825. She had a son in 1850 named Walter Foot Hillier. In 1851 she worked as a laundress in the Salisbury Steam Laundry. Jane married Thomas Foot on 18th June 1855 in Salisbury. He was a tinplate worker
5. Louisa Hillier born 29th June 1827 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. christened on 22nd July 1827.In 1841 she was a servant to John Hearn Bookseller. She married about 1850 to Thomas Trowbridge born 1828 in Donhead St Mary ,Wiltshire. He was a Brewer .Louisa died 1896 and Thomas died 1908.

6. William Hillier born 10th February 1829 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. christened on 4th April 1830. He became a bricklayer
7. Henry Hillier born 20th November 1832 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. christened on 13th January 1833. In 1881 he was a lodger at the "Pheasant Inn" 51 Salt Lane, Salisbury. He died (aged 62) 4th February 1895 in Devizes County Asylum
8. Frederick John Hillier Born 1st August 1835 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. christened on 15th November 1835. He was a bricklayers labourer at the age of 15. He joined the Rifle Brigade on 16th February 1854 (aged 19) and served in the Crimea and in India. He married in June 1865 to Elizabeth Mussell born 1842 in Nunton, Wiltshire.
Her parents were George Mussell born about 1817 in Remenham, Berkshire and Elizabeth Matthews born about 1817 in Nunton, Wiltshire. They married about 1838 in Nunton, Wiltshire. ( The parents of Elizabeth Matthews were David and Sarah Matthews)

In August 1873 Frederick and Elizabeth Hillier took the position of Porter and Porteress at the Salisbury Union Workhouse, with a salary, double rations and lodgings. In 1880 they were given an increase of salary due to the additional labour imposed on them.
In the 1881 census they were living in the Alderbury Union Workhouse, Britford, Wiltshire with their one year old son Percy who was born in the workhouse.
They retired from the workhouse with a pension in December 1895 and in 1901 they were living at 44 South Front, St Marys, Southampton with Alice their daughter.
Frederick died in February 1909 and Elizabeth in 1908. Most of their children were brought up by relatives because as a porter he was not allowed to keep his children in the workhouse

Walter Inkerman Hillier born 1866 - died 24th January 1872 (aged 6)
Alfred George Hillier born 1866 and christened on 6th January 1867 (privately). In 1881 he was a Plough boy and living with James and Fanny Wheeler in Winterbourne Dauntsey, Wiltshire. He married on 26th December 1896 in Keymer, Sussex to Charity Thompsett born 1859 in East Chittington, Sussex. Her father Alfred Thompsett was a builder. In 1901 they were living at 68 James St, Southampton, Hampshire

Alma Louisa Hillier born 1868. In 1881 (aged 13) she lived with her Aunt and Uncle Frank and Eliza Cooper in 86a Salt Lane, Salisbury. She married on 26th January 1892 to Thomas Bundy born 1870. His parents were Henry born 1825 and Esther born 1830. He had two brothers Edward born 1863 and Walter born 1865. In 1901 he was a Railway Signalman in Portswood, Southampton.

Alice Kate Hillier born 3rd April 1874 at the Britford Union Workhouse. She married Alfred George Evans born 1876 in London. They married on 1st March 1899 in Southampton. Alfred was a ships steward on a steam vessel and his father Harry M Evans was a retired officer in the Royal Artillery. They were living at 17 St Marks Terrace, Southampton when they married. In 1901 they were living at 44 South Front, St Marys, Southampton with Alice's parents
Alice and Alfred had a son Graham Evans born 1899
Ethel Maud Hillier born 1878 - died 1955. In 1901 she was a Domestic Ward maid in Dorchester, Dorset.
Percy Charles Hillier born 1879- died 1954 Married 17th April 1915 to Florence Beatrice Wilson. In 1901 occupation A.B.
Percy and Florence had two children Joseph Hillier born 1916 - died 1988 Phyllis Hillier born 1927
Edith May Hillier born 1881. In 1901 she was a Cook in Hordle, Hampshire
9. George James Hillier born 9th August 1838 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. Baptised 2nd September 1838. He was a bricklayers labourer at the age of 12 . In 1868 he was a groom and domestic servant. In 1881 he was Head Groom. He married Anne Rayn born 1840 in Quebec, Canada. She died 23rd October 1888. In 1901 George a retired Livery Stable Groom was living in Washington Villas, Fisherton without Anger, with his youngest son Walter. George died in 1902
George and Anne had five children
Frank Frederick Hillier born 9th May 1868. An apprentice Harness Maker he moved to London in his early twenties initially as a bakers packer. Married on 3rd June 1897 in Fulham, London to Alice Mary Ann Howard born 24th September1875. They died in 1934 and 1954 respectively.
Frank and Alice had three children
Frederick Hillier born 1901 in London. died 1942 a bachelor Waiter/Army.
Alice Clarissa Hillier born 13th July 1906 in London. Married 1924 to Daniel Pearman. He died 26th December 1987 in Worthing, Sussex. Alice died 21st September 1993 also in Worthing
. Maurice Victor Hillier born 1917 in London. Married about 1953 and died April 2001 in Slough
Ellen Elizabeth Hillier born 1872 married Will Quilter
Ellen and Will had four children
Nellie Quilter (spinster) d. about 1992 aged about 90 at St Andrews Catholic Home for the Elderly at Edenbridge, Kent
Vi Quilter Of Croydon
Ivy Quilter emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand with her daughter

Louisa Jane Hillier born 1873 she died young. Louisa had three children.
Walter Thomas Hillier born 1876 - died 23rd February 1937. He married Kate E born 1870 in Plymouth. In 1901 he was a Refreshment Room Waiter in Fisherton without Anger,
Walter and Kate had three children . Kate Hillier,. Monica Hillier,. Donald Hillier ( R. C. priest)
Eva May Hillier born 1879 married George Pew of Shrewsbury.
Eva and George had four children . Stanley Pew, George Pew, Eva Pew, Katherine Pew
2.William Hillier
born 10th February 1829 in Laverstock, Wiltshire. Baptised 4th April 1830. He was employed as a bricklayer.
He married Jane White born 1836 (formerly Jane Ellison) a widow on 16th May 1869 in St Martins, Salisbury. She was baptised on 25th December 1836 in Porton, Wiltshire.
Her parents were Richard and Mary Ellison. She had three siblings Henry born1839, Thomas born1841 and Emily born 1843.
Her first husband was George White and she married him on 19th April 1860 (aged 24) in St Edmunds, Salisbury.
She was a Laundress and she died (aged 39) in 1875 and was buried in The London Road Cemetery, Salisbury on 12th February 1875. ( Grave Sec F 316)
William died in 1887 (Aged 57)

1. Frederick Hillier born 15th February1871 in Staines, Middlesex, Baptised 1st March 1876 from Brown Street, Salisbury. In 1891 he was a bricklayers Labourer living in 13 Greencroft St, Salisbury with his widowed mother.
2. Kate Hillier born 18th November 1872 In Salisbury, Wiltshire
William remarried (aged 48) on the 22nd August 1877 to Sarah Collins a Laundress born 1824 in Harnham, Wiltshire and he lived with Sarah and the children at 13 Greencroft Street, Salisbury in 1881. He died in 1887 (aged 57) and was buried in The London Road Cemetery, Salisbury on 21st July 1887. ( Grave Sec E 647)

born 18th November 1872 in Mists Court, Milford Hill, Salisbury, Wilts. Christened 1st March 1876 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire
In 1877 she was living with her father and stepmother in 13 Greencroft Street, Salisbury. In 1891 she was single aged 18 and working as a ward maid in the Salisbury Infirmary
She married on the 24th December 1892 at the registry office in Alderbury, Wiltshire to William Henry Beauchamp. She was a laundress in the Salisbury Steam Laundry.
She died on the 6th February 1949 ( aged 77) in Botany Bay Rd, Sholing, Southampton.
Kate and William had twelve children. All are listed on the Beauchamp Family History page
Kate was my Grandmother on my mothers side, and is the connection between the Hillier and Beauchamp Family.
