Born 8th February 1869 in Widley, Cosham, Hampshire. His parents died and he was brought up by William and Rebecca Jacobs. At the age of 14 he became an apprentice to Mr Charles Brown a grocer in Commercial Road, Landport, Portsmouth. 

In 1888 he Joined the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, he became a sergeant and was discharged in February 1896. He became a fireman in the Fire Service stationed at St Marys Road, Southampton. In 1901 he was a Brewers Clerk and living at 26 St Mary's Road, Southampton.

He married on 7th April 1890 to Eliza Heathcote Angell born in Itchen, Southampton. She died on 18th June 1910 (aged 38) in St Marys Road, Southampton.

 Alfred re-married  on 30th November1911 to a widow Minnie Katherine Morris (nee Jones) born 1870 in Woking, Surrey. Photo

When they married he was described as a General Dealer, Minnie as a Domestic Housekeeper and they lived at 67 Princes Street, Northam, Southampton.

Minnie had two children from her first marriage and her father James Jones was a commercial traveller (deceased). Alfred and Minnie moved to Westcliffe on Sea, Essex. (at some time they lived in Westminster Drive, Westcliffe on Sea.)

In 1901 Minnie was a visitor/working for Edward Beardsley his wife Ellen and their three children Florence, Mary and Willie.

1. Lillian Mabel Johnston born 5th December 1891. She married about 1920 to Frank Thomas Lennon born about 1890 In Southampton. His Parents were William Lennon b. 1855 in the West Indies and Frances Lennon b.1855 in Tenham, Kent. Frank had a brother Charles b 1893, and a sister Catherine Alice b 1889, both born in Southampton.


2. Alfred William Johnston born 7th February 1894 and baptised on 28th November 1894

(died about 1902)


3. Albert Edward Johnston  (My father) Born 16th May 1903 in 26 St Marys Road, Southampton.

Photo He lied about his age and joined the army and served with the 4th Queens Own Hussars in India, and he stayed in the army until he was 27 years old. On his discharge he returned to Southampton where he married on 26th December 1930 in Sholing, Southampton to Ena Gertrude Beauchamp born 1906
