Alfred Evan Smith Johnston

Born 8th February 1869 in Widley, Hampshire. His parents died and he was brought up by William and Rebecca Jacobs. At the age of 14 he became an apprentice to Mr Charles Brown a grocer in Commercial Road, Landport, Portsmouth. 

In 1888 he Joined the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, he became a sergeant and was discharged in February 1896. He became a fireman in the Fire Service stationed at St Marys Road, Southampton. In 1901 he was a Brewers Clerk.
