The History of the Judd Family

From Bramshaw, New Forest  to Southampton, Hampshire, England

1. George Judd  christened on 8th June 1794 in Bramshaw, New Forest, Hampshire   

He married on 7th September 1814 to Hannah Fielder born 1789 in Bramshaw. He was under age (20) but married with his parents consent, probably due to the fact that Hannah was pregnant. Hannah (aged 25)  gave birth to her first child William two months after they married. 

George died in April 1848 (aged 54) in Cadnam, Hampshire  and was buried 4th May 1848, Hannah died in Sept 1855 (aged 66) and was buried on the 22nd September. Both were buried in St Peters Churchyard in Bramshaw.

St Peters Church, Bramshaw, New Forest is built on the top of a hill known as Judd's Hill. Bramshaw was partly in Wiltshire until the "County of Southampton Act 1894" put it all into Hampshire. The ancient church had its nave in Wiltshire and its chancel in Hampshire. The name means "Bramble Wood" .

1. William Judd born 5th November 1814 and christened on 25th December 1814.

He married on 28th July 1836 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England to Mary Jane Gibbons born 1814 and christened 23rd July 1814 in Shaftsbury, Dorset. Her parents were Joshua and Edith Gibbons.

William and Mary Jane had a son 

William Alfred Judd born in 1838 in Salisbury and christened on 21st January 1838 . He was a Butcher and he had an illegitimate child in 1864. (aged 27) The mother was Mary Ann Oram.

William Alfred Judd then married in 1867 (aged 30) to Laura Amelia Highman born 16th December 1847 and christened 16th January 1848 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Laura had these three sisters:

 Angelina Highman born 27th October 1841 and christened 28th November 1841 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire

 Mary Jane Highman born 31st October 1850 and christened 4th December 1850 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury. Married on 26th December 1870 to George Stacey Cleall  St Edmunds Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

 Alice Delia Highman born 1st May 1853 and christened 26th June 1853 in St Edmunds Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire.


William and Laura  had a daughter   Laura Edith Judd.  christened on 12th July 1868,

In 1881 William Alfred (a Butcher) was a convict guest of her Majesty's Convict Prison, Portland, Dorset. No sign of his wife. His daughter Laura Edith (aged 13) lived with her grandparents Thomas and Mary Highman at 83 Milford Hill, Salisbury, Wiltshire.

William Alfred died in 1905 (aged 67)


2. George Judd born 19th January1817  and christened on 16th February 1817 in Bramshaw. He married on 30th August 1841 to Mary Ann Gilbert born 1813 in Southampton


3. Ann Judd born on 15th January 1819 and christened on 21st February 1819 in St Peters Church, Bramshaw


4. John Judd born on 9th June 1821 and christened on 12th August 1821 in St Peters Church, Bramshaw


5. James Edmund Judd born on 7th June 1825 and christened on the 14th July 1825 in St Peters Church, Bramshaw. Married 18th September 1850 to Matilda Bishop christened on 3rd July 1826 in Stourton, Wiltshire.

 James and Matilda had three children       

George Judd born 1850  in Salisbury, Wiltshire

Richard Judd christened on 5th January 1851 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Mary Jane Judd christened on 9th August 1857 in Salisbury, Wiltshire


6. Joseph Judd born 3rd June 1828 in Bramshaw


7. Samuel Judd christened on 1st March 1829 in Bramshaw died 21st October 1846 in Minstead (aged 17) and buried 28th October1846 in St Peters Churchyard, Bramshaw


8. Isaac Judd born 25th February 1830 in Bramshaw, he was an agricultural labourer. He married Sarah and in 1881 they were living in Eling, Hampshire.

 Isaac and Sarah had three children 

 Kate Judd born 1870,  Elizabeth Judd born 1872   Rose Judd born 1874


2. George Judd Born 19th January 1817 in Bramshaw, New Forest.

He was baptised on 16th February 1817 in St Peters Church, Bramshaw. Married on 30th August 1841 in St Marys Church, Southampton to Mary Ann Gilbert born 1813 in Southampton. Her father William Gilbert was a poulterer and he lived in Russell Street, Southampton.

George was a coal dealer and lived at 56 Millbank Street, Northam . He died at Bevois Street, Southampton in 1888 (aged 71) and was buried 24th July 1888. Mary Ann died in the infirmary at St Lukes in 1869 (aged 56). She was buried 18th February 1869. They share the grave at The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, Southampton. (Grave Site O-090-193)

2. George Judd born 1844 and died in 1856 (aged 12) in Chapel Street. He was buried 17th July 1856 at The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, Southampton. (Grave Site C-013-236)


3. Mark Judd born 1845


4. Mary Judd born 1848 married 17th May 1869 to Louis Andrews (born 1848) a painter from Freemantle, Southampton. His father William was a General Dealer.


5. Hannah Judd born September 1849 and she died at her home in 56 Millbank Street and was buried 15th December 1850 (aged 14 months)  at The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, Southampton. (Grave Site B-008-174)


6. Grace Judd born 1851. She married 12th April 1877 to Bartelemy Fabronius born 1836  in France ( he was a French Subject) Grace was 26 and Bartelemy was a widower aged 41 when they married. The first wife of Bartelemy of was Anne Potter christened on 9th March 1837 in West Cowes, Isle of Wight they married on 5th October 1858 in St Marys, Southampton. (her father was William Potter and her mother Elizabeth Martell) Bartelemy was described as a cook. Later when he married Grace he was described as a Gentleman and his father Charles was an artist. They married in St James Parish, Shirley, Southampton. In the 1901 census he was living on his own means.

Grace and Bartelemy had two children 

 Mabel Anne Fabronius christened on 7th April 1878. She lived at No 2 Grace Villas, Millbrook, Southampton. In 1901 she was a Governess in Portswood, Southampton.

 Bartholomew Fabronius ( Bert) christened on 18th April 1879 in 185 Millbrook Road, Southampton. In 1901 he was an engraver in St Marys, Southampton.


3. Mark Judd born Dec 1845  in 56 Millbank Street, Southampton.

 He worked as a General Dealer, then in an Ironworks and later in the 1881 and 1901  census he was a Stone Cutter working at home.

He married on 17th March 1866 in the Southampton Registry Office to Amy Dowling born Dec 1846  in Southampton and lived at 11 York Square.

Her father Thomas Dowling born 1805 in Horsham, Sussex was a cordwainer (a shoemaker) and her mother Clara born 1811 in Hambledon, Hampshire.

Amy had a younger brother Edward born 1849. The Dowling's lived at 6 Millers Court, King Street, Southampton.

 Mark died in September 1910 (aged 65) and was buried on 13th September 1910. Amy died in November 1922 (aged 76) buried on 14th November 1922. They share a grave in The Old Cemetery. Site no C-173-139

1. Kate Lavinia (Sabina) Judd Born in the first quarter of 1870, baptised 23rd May 1878 (aged 8) at the same time as Mark. She lived in 73 Winchester Street, Kingsland.


2. Mark Judd born 1st October1875 and died ( after being baptised ) on 5th October 1877 (aged 2.) in 73 Winchester Street, Kingsland. He was buried on the 9th October 1877 in the Old Cemetery Grave site Q-107-054.


3. Mark Judd  baptised 23rd May 1878


4. Grace Judd christened on 29th August 1880. She married 30th June 1901 to Albert Henry Andrews born 1880. He was a Carter living at 73 Winton Street. ( this was Winchester Street which had been renamed)


5. George Edward Judd born 1883 and christened on 21st June 1883


6. William James Judd born 1889 and christened on 6th October 1889


4. Mark Judd born 1st April 1878 in 73 Winchester Street, Southampton. Photo

Baptised 23rd May 1878 at the same time as his sister Kate. He was a labourer and later a Fireman/Greaser.

He married on 11th November 1895 to Annie Kate Wheeler born Dec 1872 in Southampton. In 1901 she was a Laundress in Shirley, Southampton.

Her father was Richard Wheeler, and her brother Charles born 1873 in Fulham, London was a Tradesmans Carter. They gave their address as 76 Upper Canal Walk when they married. Later they were at 20 Cross Street, Kingsland, Southampton.

Mark died in May 1939 at 32 King Street, St Marys. (aged 61

Annie Kate died in January 1947 (aged 75) at 26 Nelson Street.

1. Ruby Annie Judd born 8th January 1897  in 15 Cross St, Southampton. Baptised 25th July 1897, She married about 1919 to a builders plasterer Frederick Albert Francis and  she died May 1974 (aged 77) in Castle Cary, Somerset. Photo

They had a son Frederick George Francis born 1920 and died (aged 24) on Friday 28th January 1944 in the war.

Corporal FRANCIS was the son of Frederick and R. A. Francis, of Castle Cary, Somerset.

4. John (Jack) Frederick Judd. born 1st June 1901 in 20 Cross St, Kingsland. Photo

He married Rose Violet Barsley of Eastbourne. He died 25th April 1984. They had seven children: John, Frederick, David, Susan, Linda, Jacqueline and Paul.


5.  Frederick George Judd born 15th October 1903 at 20 Cross Street, Kingsland. Photo Baptised 15th November 1903 in Holy Trinity Church.   Frederick gave his birth date as 31st October 1902 when he applied to be a Deck Boy in the Merchant Navy. We think this was to make him appear to be 18 years old, instead of 17, so that he could go to sea.

He never married and he was a stevedore in the docks. He died (aged 58) in January 1961 at 14 Bond Street, Northam. (Hostel) and was buried 3rd February 1961 in Hollybrook Cemetery. Grave site D-002-071

He worked as a seaman and later a docks stevedore. He married 27th August 1925 in St James, Southampton to Lottie Kean born 14th Aug 1899 in Barry, South Glamorgan.

 Mark and Lottie had one son. Mark Edgar Judd born 1925
