The History of the Morgan Family 

From Hinton Martell to Portsmouth and then to St Mary's, Southampton, Hampshire, England

The Family of my wife's Grandmother (mothers side)

1. Stephen Morgan born 1773 in Hinton Martell, Dorset.

He was baptised on 29th December 1773 in Hinton Martell, Dorset and he married Martha Rickett born 1778 in Morden, Dorset. They married on the 21st June 1802 in St Wolfreda Church, Horton with Woodlands, Dorset. 

Stephen and Martha moved to Havant, Hampshire  where they had their first son Stephen in 1805  and then they moved to the area of Kingston, Portsmouth where they had Jane, James and Mary Ann. Stephen was employed as a labourer. Then they moved to 14 Kings Street, St Mary's, Southampton.

Stephen died on 25th March 1855 in Cook St, St Mary's, Southampton and he was buried on the 2nd April 1855 (aged 82) in The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane Southampton. Grave site B-008-205 .

Martha died (aged 90) in 14 King St, St Mary's, Southampton and was buried 10th September 1868 in the same cemetery.

2. Jane Morgan b.1808

Born 21st February 1808 in Kingston, Portsea, Hampshire.  Baptised on 6th March 1808 in St Mary's Parish, Portsea.

She married on the 23rd March 1829 in St Mary's Parish, Southampton, Hampshire to William Tubb born 1806 and christened on 29th June 1806 in St Mary's Southampton.

His parents were James and Mary Tubb.

 Jane died 1st December 1857 (aged 49) in Cross Street, St Mary's, Southampton. William  died in the Southampton poorhouse in 1858 (aged 52) and was buried on the 22nd March 1858 in The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, Southampton.

3. James Morgan b.1811

christened 17th February 1811 in Kingston, Portsea, Hampshire.


4. Mary Ann Morgan b.1813

 born 1813 in Kingston, Portsea, Hampshire and christened on 16th April 1813 in Saint Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire. She married on 26th March 1832 in St Mary's, Southampton to William Ashton born 1811. He was a shoemaker and he died in King Street and was buried on 11th April 1847 (aged 36)

4a.  George Ashton born 1833 He was a seaman. He  married on 30th October 1856 to Frances Card born 1836 . Her father was William Card a confectioner.

4b. Joseph Ashton born 1836. He was a marine foreman. He married on 26th December 1859 to Emma Oram born 1832. Her father was John Oram a Tailor

4c. Thomas Ashton  born 1838  and christened on 4th March 1838 in St Georges Place.  He died June 1839 (aged 1) in York Street, St Marys

4d. John Ashton  born 1840 and christened on 5th July 1840 in St Georges Place. He was a carrier by trade and we do not know of his wife.

He had a son. Frederick William Ashton born 1873 and  married on 26th April 1903 to Ellen Paynter born 1872 (a widow). Her father was Joseph Bates a barge owner. 

4e. George Ashton  born 1843 and christened on 2nd July 1843 in York Street.  he died 30th July 1850 (aged 7)

4f. Ann Ashton  born 1845 and christened on 30th November 1845 in York Street. died 25th March 1872 (aged 27) in the Southampton poorhouse

4g. Stephen Ashton born 1847 in York Street.
