The 20th Hussars

The 20th Hussars were the fourth cavalry regiment to bear the number 20 in their title

The 20th Hussars have a somewhat strange lineage in as much as they were the fourth cavalry Regiment to bear that number in their title. The 20th Light Dragoons were raised in 1756, sometimes known as The Iniskilling Light Dragoons due to a belief that they were possibly formed from elements of the Light Troop of the 6th Iniskilling Dragoons. The Regiment served in Ireland before they were disbanded in 1763.

The 20th Light Dragoons were raised again ,in 1779 in Bury St Edmunds, from the Light Troops of the 3rd Dragoon guards, The 1st Dragoons and The 11th dragoons by Major General Philipson. The Regiment were raised as a result of the American war of independence although their sole job was at home carrying out coastal duties. Disbandment followed for a second time at the end of the American war of independence in 1783.

The 20th Light Dragoons were raised for a third time by Lt Colonel H Farington-Gardiner for service in Jamaica to counter the slave rebellion. After the campaign the Jamaican authorities who had been paying for the Regiment asked for them to be withdrawn, they were and returned to England in 1800. The Regiment remained as the 20th or Jamaica Regiment of Light Dragoons and remained on the Army list until 1802. The Regiment had a high esteem of discipline in the Regiment as a result of the then CO Lt Colonel Wilson forbidding the use of lashings, floggings and Courts Martial as a day to day method of discipline. In 1805 2 Squadrons were sent to Africa whilst 3 Squadrons went to Sicily and on to Egypt. The Regiment eventually disbanded once more in 1819.

The fourth and last iteration of the 20th Dragoons were raised from the 2nd European Light Horse of the Bengal Presidency which became the 20th Light Dragoons in 1861. This Regiment finally became the 20th Hussars and transferred to the Establishment of the British Army.
