Adding more RAM

Make sure you take adequate anti-static precautions before continuing any further.

There are different ways of adding RAM to an Amiga, but I am goint to concentrate on adding RAM using an accelerator/RAM card. These use standard SIMM sockets, and most of the newer boards will work with standard PC RAM SIMMs. But to be sure always phone your Board dealer to check for compatiblility, and to be extra safe make sure you can get a refund when you buy your RAM SIMM.

1. First locate the Socket on the card (1). (this example is an 030 Accelerator, but the technique is the same on all RAM/accelerator cards) There is a notch cut out on one side of the RAM SIMM, make sure this is to the left (2).

2. Place the sim into the socket, do not force it in. Push it downwards into the socket untill it sits pointing straight up.

3. Push it down firmly untill two pegs on the socket poke through the two holes on each side of the SIMM, and two metal lugs should clip into place on each side of the SIMM. Your memory is now installed!! now reinsert your card back into the Amiga and turn it on.

4. If all is well workbench should load and you will see the extra memory in the Workbench menu. If your computer fails to boot try the following:

Look in the card manual about jumper settings
Phone the card dealer for help
Remove the card and try inserting the RAM again
Give up and take the memory back to the shop, then try to get Amiga compatible RAM from an Amiga Dealer.
