Tessa Barnes, 01727 851987, with whom I was talking today, is one of the artists taking part in this. She will be showing samples of the work of at least 50 different silk painters as well as her own work and she offers the chance to have a go yourself.

Visit www.hvaf.org.uk or email Tessa directly

Hi there

It's amazing what happens when you're surfing for something completely different, but I came across your website today and it brought back floods of memories of my childhood and I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say how glad I am that the FCSA is still thriving.

My mum, Kay, was the Hon. Sec. of FCSA for many years in the earlier years of the society and I have fond memories of many of the earlier members and even doing a couple of stints as a life model when it was in its original locations, first at Hillside, behind the police station, then later above the museum on the site of the Borough Council offices.

The scanned copy of the first exhibition programme has a number of names that I remember well, simply because the art society was such a big family back then and we all seemed to visit each others homes as a result of art ! I particularly remember dear Henry Biggs, who was, at least partly responsible for the fact that I now live in Devon - he had a holiday home not far from where I live now - but, more than that, he was such a kind and warm man with great knowledge and a willingness to share it. I remember Jenny Cracknell, Roy Galley, Leo Robinson, and especially Graham Scandrett who struggled as my art teacher at France Hill School for a term.

Mostly, I must say I remember Wint with great fondness - Mum and I often visited him at his house in Bagshot, and, again, I remember what a kindly man he was, and such an inspiration to my mum's own art, so would like to add my thoughts now that he has, regrettably passed-away. Although I was only a child at the time, it was my mum's interest in art and the FCSA that has, to a degree, enabled me to have an appreciation of art in its broadest sense, although I am no proponent of the skill, so I would like to take this opportunity of wishing FCSA and all its members good luck for the future and long may the society prosper.

Kind Regards Rick Beament.
Treasurers Report (inadvertently omitted from Newsletter), November 2007

The major event over the past months has been the Exhibition. A total of 20 paintings, 3 portfolios and 21 cards were sold. Our total sales at the Exhibition were £1991.50. All artists making sales have been paid (subject to postal losses) but I have not yet received all of the other bills and expenses associated with the exhibition. A rough estimate of the likely outstanding costs seems to indicate that we will be lucky to break even.

Attendance at the Friday DYOT sessions is generally insufficient to cover the costs involved and it would be great to see more members participating, particularly at the tutored evenings. Attendance at demonstrations is generally OK but again more members would be welcomed. A particularly good demonstration was that given by Soraya French on on the 3rd October when an impressive 41 members attended. Attendance was also good (12) at Soraya's workshop on the 4th October and I am pleased to report that we covered our costs.

At the time of writing the total Income to date was £7869 mainly consisting of Exhibition results, Annual Subscriptions and Weekly Subscriptions. Our Expenditure to date stands at £6069 mainly consisting of Studio Rent, exhibition payment to artists and fees to Demonstrators and Tutors. We currently have an excess of income over expenditure of £1799.

The Balance Sheet shows our Total Assets to be £11620, this consisting of Bank Accounts, Cash in Hand and Tangible Assets. Our tangible assets will shortly be increased by the purchase of a projector for use in conjunction with the camera at demonstrations. This will enable much clearer viewing of the artists at work.

Our position against budget is looking promising subject to receiving exhibition expenses as anticipated.

Brian Hammans Treasurer.

. . . We have a new home for the screens (hurrah!). Jenny Trowsdale has kindly offered the use of her garage. Some work was needed to fix the door but this has now been carried out and we hope to move the screens across shortly. Don is looking into the possibility of free transport from one of his friends - watch this space!

Deadline for entries for the next newsletter is 16 November. Submissions to Brian R.

Christmas party - will be in the form of that old favourite "bring a dish", co-ordinated by Maureen Hayward and Rose Farmer.

Don is working on next year's programme and really could do with some help - perhaps you could ask for volunteers either to be Programme Secretary or to contribute as members of a subcommittee headed by the Prog Sec? We are trying to make the programme more varied in 2008 and would like to include some demonstrators from beyond our usual pool, so if anyone can recommend a demonstrator (or would like to try their hand) please contact Don.

We're also looking for tutors/leaders for DYOT evenings. Now's the time to speak up - the programme must be published immediately after the AGM in February. (Programme contributions to )

We plan to include a return visit to Annalisa's garden, although it may be slightly later in the year, and we're exploring potential new venues for painting days - again, suggestions welcome.

Please could you display a big advert on the website for Soraya French's workshop on Saturday 3rd November? Subject still TBA, I believe, but Don should have the latest details. . . . Anyone wanting to book should contact Don. I think we said £25 for the day. Usual times - 10am-4pm - and bring a packed lunch! She's charging quite a lot for the Friday demo and Saturday workshop, so we need to pack 'em in! I'll let Sunningdale Art Society know (they've got a meeting this coming Thursday but I can't attend it) and I might try putting up a poster in Brackendale Arts, to try to fill any shortfall - going on past experience I'll be surprised if we can pull in 15/16 attendees just from our membership. . . . .

Message from the Chair, 21 June 2007

It is my sad duty to inform you that Keith Winfield passed away yesterday, 19 June 2007. His mum, Jean, has asked me to let people know.

Keith is greatly missed. He was a stalwart in the society, quietly achieving results in the background. His contribution was understated but very effective - every active member of the FCSA has benefited from his efforts, although they may not have been aware of it. I, personally, shall miss his support, common sense and sharp awareness.

Anyone wishing to attend Keith's funeral should contact a member of the committee. Jean plans to attend the FCSA meeting on 22 June.

Webmaster's summary of message from Alan Brain

Alan forwarded an e-mail message to me about someone apparently wanting to buy some pictures. I did careful virus checking before opening it and found nothing threatening.

The mail his friend had received was suspicious for reasons listed below and the recipient went on to say:
"Fortunately, I had read about this and was concerned. Obviously, if this were real I would be interested. In my positive response to her I included the fact that I do not release any paintings until the check has cleared my bank. I have not had any response back.
The clues that were in the article that pointed to a possible scam were:
1. Poor grammar and spelling
2. Control over the pick up and delivery
3. A sense of urgency, having to move quickly
4. A foreign country somehow involved
5. A common email address (yahoo, aol, etc.)
Am I positive that this was a scam? No, but we all have to be very careful. If you think that this would be helpful to other artists, pass it on.

Message from Webmaster

Please send more pictures:- your work, snaps from workshops, FCSA activities etc. (go to Submitting Pictures for the Gallery etc.).

Also reports and news of interesting exhibitions, fairs, artists and other web sites.

STUCK FOR SOURCE MATERIAL? WANT TO SWAP?
Have you taken some interesting, unusual or inspiring digital photos on your travels? Are you ever going to get around to painting them all? Would you like to see how other artists might treat the subject matter? Are you feeling generous enough to waive copyright?
If you can answer yes to these questions, why not let the Society librarian have a CD burned with some of these images? These can then be borrowed by members who didn't quite manage to record that fascinating little tableau as the coach whizzed past, missed the moment because the local wildlife became unco-operative, haven't made it to that particular corner of the globe or are simply stuck for inspiration.
If you can give us any images, that would be great. It is essential that you are able to supply them copyright-free, i.e., they are your own photos and you are prepared to waive copyright on them. It would be helpful to have some idea of what the images are so that we can come up with a way of cataloguing them.
This is a new venture for us, so please let us know what you think.
Sue Thomson

MESSAGE FROM THE WEBMASTER

Please make use of your web site, http://www.fcsaonline.org.uk.
(a) It often contains information that appears too late for the newsletter and so which would be missed by anyone who did not look regularly at the notice board.
(b) The records of past meetings offer fascinating reading, tips etc. If you have written notes on a meeting or demo please let me,, have a copy a.s.a.p. The same applies if you did one in the past that I've not got.
(c) It gives links to galleries, artistic events, artists, demonstrators etc. TELL ME IF YOU KNOW OF ANYTHING I SHOULD ADD.
(d) It offers a free opportunity for members to publicise their work. MORE PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES ARE URGENTLY REQUIRED - the site tells you how easy it is to submit work. Why have I no photo's of sculptures yet?
(e) The Contacts page ("Members' Messages") offers an easy way to let the Society know if you can think of ways its services may be improved. For example, should we have nude models (?) encourage more unusual media (?) have more (or less) demos (?) external visits (?) meetings in different locations (?) meetings with other clubs (?) etc. etc.
YOUR INVOLVEMENT IS VITAL IF THE SITE IS TO ATTAIN ITS FULL POTENTIAL.
Thanks, Sam Dauncey

Any FCSA member wanting a message here should e-mail it to with "FCSA Message" as the Subject.

I shall censor each submission (possibly consulting the committee) - so there may be delay.
I may choose to incorporate suggestions directly.
I intend to forward constructive messages (see FCSA Contacts), but I may not reply to them.
